(Jim) Carroll williamcarrollj@bellsouth.net July 16, 2013, 12:39 am The Chattanooga Times Free Press 11-2-2004 P10 Walter Howell Jr. Walter Howell Jr., 84, of Collegedale, passed away Monday, Nov. 1, 2004, in a local hospital. He was a native of South Georgia and an active member of Collegedale Seventh- day Adventist Church, where he served as deacon for over 50 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and retired from McKee Baking Co. with 31 years as long-distance truck driver with over 3 million miles and no chargeable accidents. Mr. Howell will be remembered as a charter member of the Melody Makers music group as a guitarist with Bill and Myrtle Hulsey as leaders. He was preceded in death by his parents, Maggie and Walter Howell Sr.; brothers, Terrell and Elbert Howell; and sister, Frances Flower. Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Doris Sproule Howell of Collegedale; two sons, David and Roger Howell of Tullahoma, Tenn.; one stepson, Ron Shoemaker and wife, Carol of Ringgold, Ga.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Magalene and husband, James Snow of Griffin, Ga., Gertrude Barlow of Riverdale, Ga., Marcie Yarbrough of Griffin; three brothers, Lonnie Howell, Emmett Howell, C.M. and wife, Helen Howell, all of Griffin; several nieces and nephews. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 3, at the Valley View Chapel with Pastor Dwight Herod officiating. Burial will be at Collegedale Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Amazing Facts, P.O. Box 1058, Roseville, CA 95678.
