Additional Comments: This Cemetery Transcription has been modified to reflect information that was available from Related & Family members who were knowledgeable about various unmarked graves and proper names for some of the Tombstones that were not readable. In some cases, names were changed form the actual Marking on the stone to better reflect who these individuals actually were - a few Birth and Death dates were added that did not exist on some of the Markers ! The Mt. Airy Baptist Church has been around since the Mid 1800's and was also used as a School House for many years. James Madison 'Jim' & Elvira (Grizzle) Gooch donated the lands for the purpose of building the Church. 'Jim' was born 10 Feb 1829 & died on 22 Jul 1913. He and Elvira are buried in the Church Cemetery. The Church has been Restored recently and most of it's orginal support logs and other features were kept in place. For many years it is and has been the Site for the Annual 'Gooch' Reunion that is held each year on the fourth Sunday in July. Note #1 - 'Jim' and Elvira's Tombstone states the following: 'They were of the first Settlers. They lived a Christian Life and were Loved by all that knew them - At Rest ! It also states: 'He was a Deacon of the Baptist Church for Many Years ! Note #2 - Ann Marr's Tombstone has the following inscription on it: 'Christ has called unto himself one of the Best Diciples with a smile she parted from Life unto Life' ! Note #3 - Charlie Lafayette Marr's,(Son of W. A. Marr), Tombstone states the following: 'He gave his Life for his Country None Knew Thee but to Love Thee'! Marker has a beautiful Cross designed on it!
