His father was an itinerant Irish laborer who disappeared when Joel was born, and his deserted and unmarried mother barely managed to make a living as a seamstress. Unable to continue school because of his household's financial strain, Harris went to work when he was thirteen on a weekly paper published by Joseph Addison Turner, owner of Turnwold Plantation, where Harris spent four years that changed his life and that directed him toward a long and successful career in the newspaper trade. After having worked on newspapers in various Southern cities, including New Orleans and Savannah, in 1876 he took a position with The Atlanta Constitution, where he remained for twenty-four years, and where he first presented the Uncle Remus stories. The first volume of Uncle Remus stories, Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings, was published in 1880, and it was followed over the years by more than twenty other books on a variety of Southern subjects. Among his works are Nights with Uncle Remus: Myths and Legends of the Old Plantation (1883), Free Joe and Other Georgian Sketches (1887), and Gabriel Tolliver: A Story of Reconstruction (1902). "Mingo: A Sketch of Life in Middle Georgia" is taken from Mingo and Other Sketches in Black and White (1884); "The Wonderful Tar-Baby Story" and "How Mr. Rabbit Was Too Sharp for Mr. Fox" are taken from Uncle Remus: His Songs and Sayings.
