Grady graduated from the University of Georgia in 1868 and subsequently studied law at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He later served as associate editor of The Rome Courier and editor of The Rome Commercial. His career in journalism in Georgia continued when he became a part owner of The Atlanta Daily Herald, which was forced to close down in 1876. With the help of Cyrus Field, he became part owner of The Atlanta Constitution. Grady never ceased to speak out on behalf of a New South that would profit from advances in agriculture, industry, and education. "The New South" was delivered before the New England Society in New York City on December 21,1886; the speech is taken from The Complete Orations and Speeches of Henry W. Grady, edited by Edwin DuBois Shurter (1910). From The New Reader of the Old South Edited by Ben Forkner and Patrick Samway, S.J.
