Pierce Rev. Jeptha Matthew Hawkins was born near White Sulphur Springs, Hall Co., Ga. He joined the Church in 1884 and was licensed to preach in 1894. He served 9 years in the pastorate but we think of him chiefly in connection with the Orphans Home. As he went here and there looking for funds for his college expenses his path crossed Miss Mamie Wilbanks and they married. It was said that they both "gave their very life's blood for the little ones." These orphaned boys and girls called them, "Uncle Mat" and "Aunt Mamie." In addition to their contribution to the Home they had two children of their own, Mrs. Imogene Harrison and Rev. Ralph Hawkins, a member of this Conference and his father's successor in the work of the Home. His health began to fail and he was superannuated after more than 30 years of constant toil. We doubt not that He who values even a cup of cold water given "to one of the least of these" has high appraisement for him who has done so much for so many "of the least of these."
