Dempsey Dr. Newton, Dean of Southern Methodist missionaries died in Atlanta at age 83. He was born in South Carolina and educated in Kentucky Military Institute with a post graduate work at Johns Hopkins, he went to Japan as a missionary in 1888, continuing as an active missionary until his superannuation in 1924, after 36 years of service. Shortly after his arrival in Japan, a daughter died and she is buried in Tokyo, Japan. The other daughter, Mrs. Marvin Underwood, was the comfort and inspiration of his last days. He was one of the great Christian educators of Japan, having been Professor in the Union Methodist Theological Seminary, Dean of the Theological Dept. of Kwansei Gakuin and President of the named institutions. In recogination of his distinguished contribution to the welfare of the Japanese Empire he was decorated with the Blue Ribbon Medal by the Imperal Gov. before leaving Japan in 1923. It was said that more than 2,000 Japanese people followed Dr. and Mrs. Newton to the ship where they made their departure. Mrs. Newton was Miss Lettie E. Lay of S.C. Since his retirement, Dr. Newton completed a manuscript of a book dealing with the contribution of the British Empire to the civilization of the world and was writing a volume on Ethics. He is survived by the before mentioned daughter who cared for him in illness and also a sister, Mrs. Olivia Evart of Greenville, S.C. and one niece, Mrs. Robert Day of Atlanta. Dr. Newton's funeral was held at St. Mark Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Dr. Newton was fluent in the Japanese language and aided in the translation of the Bible from English to Japanese.
