The Zorns in America (continued) Nicholas and Cathrina entered America via the Charleston Harbor, SC in 1735. They left behind the ZornCastle in the Rhine Valley and members of the Zorn family. Not far from the castle is the Zorn River by which there is held Rose Festivals*.Little did they know that two hundred years later Zorns would be growing Roses in Tyler, Smith Co. Texas or that a beautiful Rose Festival would be held there annually. After entering the Charleston Harbor in South Carolina the Zorns settled in the Orangeburg District of the state. That District was made up of the present counties of Orangeburg, Barnwell, and Bamberg. They were given land grants on South Edisto River near Bamberg, SC and on Little Salkehatchie River I n the area of Denmark-Govan, SC. Records in the present day Barnwell County Courthouse show the River as the Little “Saltkatcher” and present day residents still refer to it by that name. Some of the Zorns still live in this area. The grants on the Edisto and Salkehatchie Rivers were given to Henry Zorn for furnishing provisions and forage to the Continental States Troops and Militia- Revolutionary War. Henry Zorn is also shown on Roster of Company of Captain Lewis Golson of Colonel John Chevellett’s Regiment, Cherokee Way 1759-1762. The records in the Barnwell County, SC Courthouse state that two brothers, Nicholas and David Zorn bought 300 acres “on the Bull Pond” in the District of Barnwell “on the waters of the Little Saltkatcher River (from their father’s estate) being part of an original land grant to Henry Zorn containing 640 acres” And that they also purchases a 54 acre tract adjoining the 300 acres form heirs of their father. Three sons of Nicholas III immigrated from Barnwell SC to Upson Co. Georgai between 1830 and 1840 As all three brothers and their families are on the 1840 Upson Co. Georgia census. They were: William, Nathan and JAMES. Nicholas brother, David had started the migration West as he left for Clayton, Ala- Bama before his nephews left for Georgia. Members of the JAMES Zorn family made its way from Orangeburg, SC to Clayton, Alabama. Then to Gadson, Etowah Co. Alabama,Talbot Co. Georgia; Thomaston, Upson Co. Georgia; Tyler, Smith Co. Texas; To Florida; to the following places in Texas: Austin, Dallas, Garland, Lubbock, Houston ; To Chattanoga, Tennessee, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Pocatello, Idaho and back again to Columbia, South Carolina only forty miles and almost 300 years from where it began.
