Some Brassells and Coes were also in this area. Moses was the son of Admiral Hattox and Sarah Nelson. Moses and Rachel Hattox moved to Georgia ca 1804-05 since their last 3 children were born in Georgia. In 1818 Moses bought land in Jasper County from Joel Sturdivant(Book B, p.26). It is unclear when they moved to Upson County, but by 1825 only Rachel Hattox is listed on the Tax Lists for the area. It is assumed Moses Hattox died before that time. It is unknown where they are buried. Moses Hattox and Rachel Hattox's son Philip was the Captain of the Military District 11 (later District 470th). Philip owned Lot#156 and Moses and Rachel Lot #185 which were actually adjoining. This land is located south of Yatesville, GA on the corner of Pleasant Grove Rd and Kendall Road. Going South Rachel's land is on the right side of Pleasant Grove and Philip's is on the left, with Kendall Road being the southern border. Rachel and Moses other sons were: Elijah, James, John, and Gabriel Hubbard. Elijah owned land in the area for a short time(1825 Tax List, 91 acres, Dist 11, Blk 156, adjoining Rachel Hattox), moved to Troup Co (along with brother James as they both had married Gilmore sisters)and they both eventually moved to Pontotoc Co, MS between 1841-1843. Elijah was living in Upson when he drew land in the 1827 Lottery, drawing Lot #213 in Lee County. I have not found any evidence he ever lived there. James Hattox acted as agent for his mother on the Tax List for 1825 in Upson Co. He drew 2 parcels in the 1827 Lottery, drawing a fractional lot, Lot#187 in Troup Co, GA. He also drew land in Carroll Co, Sect 5, District 4, Lot #16. It is unknown what he did with this land, but was in some financial need in 1829 when his mother died and had to borrow money against the estate. In the Gold Lottery, James drew from Troup County, drawing land in Sect 2, Dist 2, Lot#508 in Cherokee Co. Again we do not know what he did with this land. He moved with Elijah to Pontotoc Co, MS ca. 1841. John Hattox lived in Jasper Co, GA in the 1820s and drew land in the 1821 Land Lottery in Henry Co, GA, District 15, Block 118. The disposition of this land is unknown. There is a John Haddox listed on the 1830 Census of Troup County as well as one in Harris Co, GA. It may have been he moved about that time, but he is documented as living the rest of his life in Harris County, GA. Philip Hattox was Military Captain in Upson County, District 11. He paid taxes 1825-1827 on his land in Upson and in 1825 on land in Early Co, GA. He apparently bought out brother Elijah in Upson County as he was paying taxes on Elijah's land in 1826. I have numerous land transactions and court records on Philip. Philip had a temper (per numerous court cases) and enroute from Thomaston, 16 January 1829, after an afternoon of drinking, Philip and his neighbor Jethro Jackson got into a fight and Philip Hattox killed Jackson. The Governor of Georgia, John Forsyth, issued a proclamation for his arrest and even offered a reward. Philip took his 4 children (his wife was deceased) and fled to Texas, changing his last name to his mother's maiden name of Coe. Philip was a rogue of a sort, a womanizer, but was very successful in Texas, being a delegate to the Texas Consultation in 1835, serving in the Texas Revolution, friend and partner with Sam Houston, and he led the Somervell Expedition to Mexico in 1842-43. Philip Hattox Coe owned a vast amount of land in Texas while his land in Upson County was sold on the courthouse steps for taxes in Aug 1828. Philip married and had a large family in Coe Valley near Gonzales, TX and died in December 1852 after being shot by a neighbor at a gambling hall in Gonzales. He is buried in Coe Valley. A Texas Centennial Marker marks his grave. Gabriel Hubbard Hattox was only 15 when his mother Rachel died and lived for a short time with brother Elijah in Troop County. I am assuming when Elijah moved to Pontotoc Co, MS, Hubbard headed west to Texas where he joined brother,Philip H.Coe in nearby Washington Co, TX. He married and lived in Texas the rest of his life. Moses and Rachel Hattox's daughters: Lucreasy Hattox married John Hunt and for awhile lived in Upson County. Daughter Martha Hattox married William James Brassell, son of Britain and Ladicy (Davis) Brassell of Upson County, and moved to Fayette Co, GA. Daughter Delilia Hattox married John Irvin and we have yet to trace their family. I just completed a synopsis of the information we have on the Hattox family in a book I presented to Penny Cliff at the Upson County Archives last week. It is listed under the Shattles Family of Upson County as last year it was revealed that one of Moses Hattox's sons fathered a child with a Shattles girl (proven by DNA in 2008). My assumption right now that it was Philip, but more exploration is needed.
