Upson County Georgia Bios File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by DNHAMILL@aol.com David Hamill Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/upson.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm Here is what I have on your Hightower family which I am sure will not add to what you have, but perhaps you may be able to correct it. I won't be shocked if you tell me there are glaring errors in what I have. What I have on your line is mostly downloaded though I am also working through all of the Hightowers in the 1850 Census. Because of the difficulty in finding Martha's ancestors I have begun a database of all Hightowers pre 1850 and some later ones. Hopefully this will lead me to the right family eventually. This is based on a family Bible (legibility was an issue in some places). Descendants of UnknownM Hightower 1 UnknownM Hightower b: Bet. 1759 - 1803 VA .. +UnknownF Unknown b: Bet. 1789 - 1803 GA m: Abt. 1817 ..... 2 Nancy Hightower b: May 11, 1818 d: March 20, 1891 ......... +Unknown Robinson b: Bet. 1788 - 1838 ..... 2 James M. Hightower b: July 18, 1832 d: May 13, 1835 ..... 2 Green A. Hightower b: November 15, 1834 I am hypothesizing that she and her siblings listed above belong to the following family. Descendants of John Butler Hightower 1 John Butler Hightower b: 1774 District 96, SC d: 1850 Lowndes County, GA .. +Mary Guess/Guest *2nd Wife of John Butler Hightower: .. +Hypothetical Second Wife Unknown The 1830 and 1840 census for this John match Martha and her siblings .... and do not match at all the earlier family attributed to John and Mary Guess (not shown here). The probable wife in those censuses does not match Mary Guess. An alternative explanation of these censuses would be that the children present therein are the grandchildren of John Butler Hightower. I don't know yet where Martha was living before she married George Washington Payne in Talbot Co in 1857. So far I have not been able to locate with certainty any of Martha's siblings in the 1850 census. If nothing else Martha's family could be of interest to you to avoid confusion with your line. Lets stay in touch on these Hightowers. I am interested on anything on your line because to the need to differentiate and identify clues to my line. Of course they could turn out to be the same, but so far it does not look like it. When I go to Thomaston I will collect information on any Hightower I can find.
