All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Sheila Schmutz sheila.schmutz@usask.ca November 28, 2007, 7:13 am Author: Sheila Schmutz Benjamin Oliver, Senior (abt 1784 Caroline County, VA – aft 1731 Jones or Upson County, GA) Benjamin Oliver, Junior was one of the ten children of Benjamin Oliver, Senior and his wife Sarah. Ben, Jr. was born in Caroline County VA. Benjamin Oliver, Sr. and Junior are shown on the 1805 list of taxpayers in Warren County, as are his brothers John and Robert. 1 This suggests they were all over 21 years of age at this time. Benjamin Oliver, Junior married Nancy Rose, on March 7, 1802 in Warren County, GA2. She was born in 1786 in Halifax County, North Carolina to William Rose, Jr. and his wife Sarah Crawley. For whatever reason he was left only 25 cents in his father’s will in 1809 3, whereas all of his other siblings received more. Did he displease his father or had he received a settlement earlier? I suggest that he is the Benjamin Oliver, living in Jones Co, GA in 1820 and 1830 4 with Nancy and three sons and two daughters. Ben Junior’s brother John and his late sister Nancy’s son, William Candler, were also living in Jones County in 1820. His brother John Oliver then moved to Talbot Co, GA by 1830 and his nephew William Candler moved to Coosa County, AL by 1841. Based on this 1820 census, Benjamin was engaged in agriculture with one other person, likely his oldest son John. They had no slaves in 1820 or 1830 and so probably were not wealthy farmers. Their children were: John born about 1804, Emily born about 1810, Augustus born in 1818, Sarah Ann born about 1819 and Columbus born about 1820. The four younger children all attended a free or public school in Jones County, Georgia between 1829 and 1831 5. Their son John was likely already married by 1829. He is thought to be the John Oliver living in Bibb Co, GA with a wife and two young sons in 1830 6. By 1840 John and his wife Nancy had 5 children. Between 1842 and 1850 one of their sons and John seem to have died. In the 1850 census, Nancy is living with their son Perry, born about 1827, Martha born about 1833, Robert L. born about 1837 and Eliza born about 1842. Their family moved to Sumnter County, GA by 1870. The rest of the family of Benjamin Oliver, Jr. seems to have moved to Upson County sometime after 1831. Their daughter Emily Oliver married Winship Page, Jr. about 1829 and they were living in Upson County, GA in 1830, as was Winship’s father, James Page. They had no children at the time of the census but had their first son William shortly thereafter. They had 10 children in total, but some died as children. Between 1850 and 1860 the family moved to Chambers County, Alabama. Emily died between 1870 and 1880. Family legend says that many family members died in a house fire. Their son Augustus Oliver married Elizabeth Emeline Hamrick on Dec. 24, 1840 in Upson County, GA. She was born on March 1, 1818 in Yatesville, Upson County to a Primitive Baptist Preacher, John Marshall Hamrick and his second wife, Nancy Todd. They had their first child, John Henry Oliver in 1841 and had 10 children in all. They moved to Chambers County, Alabama by 1844 and then to the adjacent Tallapoosa County by 1848. Augustus served in the Civil War from Alabama. After the war, in about 1869, the family moved to Titus County, Texas. By 1880 they moved to Franklin County, TX. He died in 1887 in Jack County, TX and is buried in the Cundiff Cemetery 7. Sarah Ann Oliver married Alexander Crawford on January 25, 1844 in Upson County, Ga. They had one daughter and three sons 8. Alexander appears to have died between 1860 and 1870. Sarah Ann is living with her son Zachary T. Oliver in 1870 in Upson County. She was living with her youngest son Augustus F. Crawford and his family in 1880 in Upson County, GA. Bejamin Oliver, Junior’s youngest child was Columbus Oliver. The only record I can find is that he attended school in Jones County, GA in 1831 at the age of 9 5. He was not listed in the school lists of 1829 or 1830 with his siblings so was likely considered to young to attend school then. According to family lore he died on a boat on the Mississippi River before the Civil War. He was thought to have been single at the time. It is possible that he died much before the war since I can’t find him in the 1850 census either. Benjamin may have died between 1830 and 1840. I can’t find any census record for him, his wife Nancy or their young children in 1840. He appears to have died by 1850 since Nancy is living without him. In 1850, Nancy Oliver is living with Dianna Persons in Upson County, GA. Both women are 66 and presumed widows. This Dianna Persons is likely Dianna Neal born 1784 to Thomas & Sarah Neal, and lived in Warren Co, GA in her early years. She apparently married Jones Persons about 1790. Dianna had a sister Drucilla Neal who married Hardy Pitts in 1807 in Warren Co., GA. This Hardy Pitts had a sister named Patience Pitts who married Nancy Rose Oliver's brother-in-law Robert V. Oliver on July 16, 1805 in Warren County, GA. Therefore these families were interwoven by marriage. ____________ “The Reconstructed 1790 Census of Georgia”, available on Ancestry.com Warren County GA marriages, GenWeb Will of Benjamin Oliver [Senior], certified copy obtained from the Warren County probate clerk. 1820 and 1830 census, Jones County, GA Georgia Official Records, Poor School and academy lists 1823-1836. 1830, 1840, 1850 census Bibb County, GA. Submitted by Sheila Schmutz on November 22, 2007. sheila.schmutz@usask.ca My notes: Based on Y DNA, I have been able to piece together that my ancestor Augustus Oliver was the son of Benjamin Oliver, Jr and Nancy Rose. They married in Warren County Mar 7, 1802 and then moved to Jones County by 1820. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gaoliver/OliverLines.html 1820 United States Federal Census > Georgia > Jones > Capt Buckhalters District p.131 John Oliver 1 - - 1 - 1 //2 3? 1 1 - // - 2 - .............
