Date: Mon, 23 Sep 2002 12:22:33 -0400 Subject: Dear Virginia, Just thought it might be of interest to you and your friends that the old Riggins Cemetery at Dripping Rock on the river, is bigger than is thought. My grandmother was Ada Riggins Gilbert (of the Gilbert Family Cemetery Gilbert's on Jeff Davis Road). Grandpa was Robert Edgar Gilbert ( whose grandmother, Eliza Ann More Gilbert , is buried in the Gilbert Cemetery). The house that my mother was reared in is gone now and a trailer sits where it was. It was the last house on the left before the Cemetery. My great-granddaddy, James Jay Riggins, owned a thousand acres down there and up the mountain to Buzzard's Roost. Any way, back to the cemetery..... family tradition has it that there are unmarked graves back behind the current cemetery where the woods have grown up on what is now Boy Scout property. I am told that there are slave graves in there too. I called the Boy Scout Camp, as well as the main office of the scouts in Columbus....... they could have cared less........Just though historically someone should know. My great-grandparents, J.J. and Martha Padgett Riggins are there. His mother's family, the Alfords, are buried up the road in the Alford Cemetery behind Aldean alford's house on Dripping Rock Road. Her name was Winford Alford Riggins and is traceable back to the North Carolina House of Reps.
