UPSON COUNTY, GA - CEMETERIES - Cedar Grove Cemetery African American Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: David Paterson Table of Contents page: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/upson.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm Cemetery at Cedar Grove Church On Hwy 36, west from Thomaston, on the north side of the road Copied by David E. Paterson, April 9, 1996 The western half of this cemetery is fairly well maintained, but there are no clearly laid-out rows. The eastern (older) half of this cemetery is largely overgrown, many gravesites having trees and saplings growing up through them. The eastern boundary is a barbed wire fence. Some shallow graves have collapsed, and fragments of wooden coffins are visible through holes in the earth, so a visitor must be careful how he treads. The cemetery contains innumerable unmarked graves. Other sites are marked with temporary staubs apparently placed by funeral homes in the 1940s. Several of the paper labels in these staubs are still legible, however. This writer realizes that lack of a diagram or row description will make locating particular graves in this list difficult. The best help he can give is that he began copying in the southwestern corner, near the highway, then worked in zig-zag legs, north and south, while gradually moving toward the east. The last graves found were to the east of the access road in the southeastern part of the cemetery. The table below reproduces the inscriptions of all grave markers I could locate. Dates are shown in MM/DD/YYYY format, but otherwise all inscriptions are transcribed verbatim. Terms of address, such as "Rev." "Mr." and "Mrs." that are part of the inscription are included with first names, while "Jr." "Sr." and the like are included with the last names. An asterisk (*) in the last column indicates that the marker is inscribed with the name or initials of the Sons & Daughters of Mary & Martha Society.
