UPSON COUNTY, GA - Old Mill Cemetery Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: David Paterson Old Mill Graveyard (Also known as: "Confederates Cemetery" 1867 -- later "Thomaston Colored Cemetery (1897). Near the Peerless Mill) Located in Thomaston, west of intersection of Peerless Rd. and Edgewood Ave., behind Thomaston Mills Finishing Division. Copied by David E. Paterson, September 3, 1996 This cemetery contains many unmarked graves. No attempt has been made to account for them. Since the cemetery is not laid out in discernable rows, I started from the road, copying the north half of the cemetary until I reached the mill fence that marks the western boundary. From there, I worked south, then east back to the road. Many markers are damaged or buried. If I could uncover obscured inscriptions without an unseemly amount of excavation, I did so. The listing below reproduces the inscriptions of all grave markers I could locate. Dates are shown in MM/DD/YYYY format, but otherwise all inscriptions are transcribed verbatim. Terms of address, such as "Rev." "Mr." and "Mrs." that are part of the inscription are included with first names, while "Jr." "Sr." and the like are included with the last names. An asterisk (*) in the last column indicates that the marker is inscribed with the name or initials of the Sons & Daughters of Mary & Martha Society. The Daughters of Mary and Martha Society was a mutual-aid society started by the ladies of St. Mary AME Church in the 1880s. It was primarily to provide funds for decent burial for members - hence the tombstone inscriptions. The society was later expanded to include men, so became the Sons and Daughters of Mary & Martha Society. It later opened membership to persons outside the AME church, and expanded its charitable missions. Today, it owns and operates several houses in Thomaston that it rents to low-income persons, and runs a youth program. * Mary * [Stinson] 12/6/1879 10/12/1914 wife of Qunie Stinson James Hill 3/21/1896 1/28/1986 Jamie B.
