UPSON COUNTY, GA - CENSUS 1850 Mortality ***************** Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm *********************** This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: David Paterson 1850 Mortality Schedule for Upson County User Notes Persons included in the Mortality Schedule were intended to be "every person who died during the year ending 1st June, 1850, whose usual place of abode at the time of death was in this family." All data, including abbreviations, have been transcribed exactly from the microfilmed original, with the following exceptions: Ditto marks (") and the abbreviation (Do.) have been replaced with the data that they refer to. This ensures that, if lines of this database are electronically extracted or resorted, the data will not be confused. Doubtful readings are shown with [?]. COLUMN NAMES that may need explanation: # The left-hand number column was added by me to show the order in which persons were listed in the original schedule. The numbers do not represent any numbers on the original schedule, and therefore should not be cited as references. For the information of researchers who may want to double- check the data against the microfilm, names listed as my numbers 1 through 35 appear on page 639, my numbers 35 through 70 appear on page 641, and the last four names appear on page 643. First Name/Last name The original record does not separate first and last names. I have done so to facilitate electronic searching or sorting, if ever desired. Age Ages for infants under one year old were given as fractions (example: 3/12 means three months) Color W= White, B= Black, M= Mulatto F/S F= Free, S= Slave M/W M= Married, W= Widowed I have elected not to sort in alphabetical order. Comparison shows that the order of names in the Mortality Schedule follows the order in which households were recorded in the Population Schedule; however the Mortality Schedule does not record household numbers. If the Mortality Schedule is sorted alphabetically, it becomes impossible to associate a particular dead person with the correct household. For example, there are two persons with the same last name (Robert Collier and Elizabeth Collier) in the Mortality Schedule, but three Collier households in the Population Schedule. Comparison of the order in which they were recorded makes it obvious in which households these persons died. Sorting alphabetically would prevent this association. The slaves in the Mortality Schedule were listed by first name only, making family identity highly improbable (although there is a theoretical chance to do this using proximity to owners, based on recorded sequence). Arranging slave names alphabetically guarantees that identifying them is impossible.
