Flewellen House Dr. Edward A. Flewellen was born in Warren County, Georgia, on September 17, 1819, and died at his home at The Rock, Georgia on December 9, 1910. He is buried in Glenwood Cemetery here in Thomaston. His family moved to Culloden, where he received his early education at the Old Darby Academy, which was run by John Darby of Macon and M.M. Mason of New Hampshire. Dr. Flewellen received his literary education at Randolph-Macon College in Virginia and his medical education at Jefferson College, Philadelphia, gradu ating on March 18, 1851. The following year, he started to Alabama to locate and stopped for a visit to Dr. John Calvin Drake, who had married his aunt. Dr. Drake prevailed on him to locate at Thomaston, and took him as a partner. Here he practiced medicine and surgery until the War Between the States. Dr. Flewellen enlisted in the Confederate Army in early 1861, and on May 16, was commissioned as surgeon of the 5th Georgia Regiment, Co K, C. S. A. with the rank of Major. On July 2, 1861, he was made chief surgeon and inspector of hospitals by General Johnston, which office he held until the close of the war. He was placed in charge of General Hosptial at Pensacola, Florida, until the regiment was ordered to Chattanooga, and form there to Cumberland Gap. He was attacked with pleurisy and pneumonia, which came near being fatal. He often said but for the nursing of a faithful negro slave who was his attendant, he would surely have died. As soon as he was able to travel he was sent to Corinth, Miss, and from there to LaGrance to establish a hospital. On December 23, 1862, he was announced by General Bragg as Medical Directory of the department and Army of Tennessee, to relive Medical Director Ford, who was transferred to the staff of General J.E. Johnson. While headquarters were at Missionary Ridge, Medical Director Flewellyn tendered his resignation because of failing health. On July 2, 1864, Surgeon E.A. Fllewellyn was made Inspector Dr. Flewellen also represented Upson County in the legislature and senate for a while. Dr. Flewellen was never married. At the time of his death he was President of the Upson County Railroad. Location of old home place: Go out the Barnesville Road, Highway 36, approximately 7.5 miles to The Rock.
