During the Victo rian era, popular literary works had a great influence on architecture. The Steamboat Gothic Style, for example, evokes images of Mark Twain's novels depicting the Mississippi River steamboat era. The principal Queen Ann features are the tower, the asymmetrical shape, and the wrap-around porch. The main feature of the Steamboat Gothic Style is the porch. It has decorative railing at the top and bottom, reminiscent of old river boats. Mr. And Mrs. W. A. Harp built this house in 1894. The two story house took four years to build. Their daughter, Pearia Harp Trice, added eight new rooms and four baths, making it into a twenty-one room apartment house. The house was inherited by Pearla's daughter, Christine Trice Starling, who later sold it to Colonel and Mrs. H. M. Harp .
