We have left Chickahoming and we are now in about 2 miles of Richmond but I don’t know how long we will stay hear. It is thought that we will go to Chatanooga, Tenn and I hope that we may for I am tired of Va for we don’t get anything to eat but crackers and beef and half of the time no salt to put on the beef and some times we don’t get any for too days. I think that the Southern Confederacy is about with out something to eat. I am sorry to tell you that tip Bragg is dead he got wounded through the knee and it was about to mortify and the Doctors cut it off and he lived about four or five days he died today about ten oclock I did not get to see him after he was wounded I wanted to see him verry bad but I could not get to see him but the poor fellow has bin a faithfull soldier he done his duty and he was liked by all of the boys and officers. I wish that he could of bin sent home but thear is no chance to do it when he was wounded they give him a furlow but he was not able to go I did not think that he was hurt verry bad but the next time I herd from him he was dead tip Hammock is with us this evening he is well he told me that Bill Watson was ded and Rape Bird got killed I told you in my other letter that Barker and Collier and Jackson and Sharman was dead I sent you and Joe and Vina a letter by W.L Adams that was dated July 9th we had several wounded and some of them will die seartrain I don’t hear nothing about any Yankees now about here I think that we run them all off from about here they say that thear is some Yankees about the Valley of Va Dr. Reed says that thear is about too hundred men buryed at Rich. Every day the sick men cant get no attention thear at all I have had verry good health and I hope to God that I may still have good health but I trust in God not in man I think that I will see you all again I never did think that I would get killed in a battle though I may be killed in the next battle I tell you that they liked to of got me before I got a shock by a bum shell I begin to think that my time had come I reckon that you have herd more about the fight than I can tell you so I will close by saing write as often as you can and direct your letters to Richmond Va in care of Capt Heartsfield 13 Regt. Ga Vol Lawtons Brigade be sure to put Lawtons Brigade if you don’t put that on them they will not know what Brigade to send them too You can tell all how to direct thear letters Nothing more at this time be shure to write as soon as you get this I written to Cousin Martha Griggs few days ago Jef is sick John is well and Bill is well Len is sick I herd that Len had got a discharge but I don’t know whether it is so or not nothing more at this time I still remain your affectionate Brother until Death Thomas J. Ferguson Tell Vina and Joe to write as often as they can and I will do the same. Additional Comments: Thomas J. Ferguson was born in Upson County, Ga. abt. 1840 and died in Richmond, Va.
