H 53rd GA Reg 7. Served 3 years & 2 months 8. I was not discharged nor transferred 9. Discharged regular military duty: 3 years & 2 months 10. Discharged in Griffin, GA at the surrender in April 1865 11. Present occupation. Carpentering & farming 12. Per annum maked: $25.00 13. Occupation since 1865? Carpentering mostly 14. Sum necessary for my support per year. $60.00 I could earn $25.00. 15. Phyiscal Condition:In July 1862 I was injured by the explosion of a shell and have never recovered from the injury. 16. Basis for application: Infirmity & Poverty 17. As stated above I have never recovered from the injury received in 1862 and in addition I have rheumatism. 18. Possess: One horse & wagon, one cow & calf 19. In 1893 & 1894 I possessed: One horse & wagon, one cow & calf which I still have on hand. 20. During those years, I resided in Upson County. I retained one horse & wagom, cow & calf 21. How supported during 1893 -1895: by money inherited by my wife from the estate of her father. 22. Thornton, of said State and County - answer question to support the application of Leonidas Crowell. 1. W.J. Thornton. I reside in Pike County, GA 2. I have known Leonidas Crowell for 40 years. 3. He resides in Upson County, GA. He has been a resident of this state 40 years. 4. I know he served in the Confederate army: Yes, I was there and saw him. 5. In April 1862 he enlised in Co H 53rd GA Reg at Griffin, GA. 6. Yes, I was a member of the same company and regiment. 7. How long did he perform his duties, and what do you know of his service? In July 1862 at the Battle of Malvern Hill,VA he was wounded and sent to hospital and never returned for duty. He was not discharged until the surrender in April 1865. 8. What property, effects or income has the applicant? (Blank) 9. What property, effects or income did the applicant have i 1892-1894? Name: Z. Lawrence. I reside in Upson County GA 2. Acquainted with Leonidas Crowell: I have known him over 30 years. 3. He resides in Upson County & has resided in this state over 30 years. 4. He had the horse & wagon that he still has on hand. 10. Applicant's occupation: Carpenter by trade. Physical condition feeble. 11. Support himself? He is not able to support himself on accounty of being crippled and feeble health. 12. 1893-1894 supported "by money inherited by his wife, amounting to about $480.00 13. What portion of support in past 2 years did he earn? About $10.00 for each year from his own labor. 14. Physical Condition: He returned from the war a cripple from rheumatism and has never recovered from it. 15. What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by this applicant: None. Z. Crowell, applicant for pension.... "Right leg about 1 1/2 in shortened, considerably ematiated. Rigit contraction of palmar muscles of right foot drawing down all the toes especially the second which is drawn completely under the palmar surface. I was wounded in battle in Maryland & sent to the Hospital at Howard's Grove VA on order of Capt Riley in Oct 1862. Afterwards while on a crutch, worked in Government Shops Macon, GA until end of war. 9. How much can you earn by your own labor? Nothing 10. What has been your occupation since 1865? Carpenter & farmer 11. Basis for application: 1st & 2nd "age, poverty"; "infirmity and poverty". 12. For a number of years I have been in such condition that I could not earn my suport. In 1862, I was shot in the right hip by a piece of shell & have suffered from it ever since, and my constitution's broken down. 13. Property - None 14. During 1903-1908 property - None 15. In what county did you reside during these years, and what property did you then return for taxation? In Upson Co. GA. I had no property 16. Supported 1903-1908 by my children 17. Support was about $75 a year. I as not able to contribute anything. 18. Employment 1903-1908. I was not able to do anything. 19. Family: I have no family. My wife died about 8 years ago. I have been acquainted with L.H. Crowell more than 40 years. 3. He resides in Upson Co, GA. Resident of GA ever since I knew him. 4. I know he is a cripple but I was not old enought to be in the War. 5. I was not in the War. 6. How long he served? I do not know. 7. Surrendered: I do not know 8-9 - I do not know 10. How do you know all this? Ash heas been wounded & was a carpenter, I suppose ______ ? ____ he was not present. 11. Propery: None. I have known him intimately for years 12. 1903-1909 property None 13. Has he conveyed his property in the past 4 years? No 14. Occupation: Farmer & carpenter. His physical condition is very poor & he is not able to work. 15. Crowell of Upons County, GA. That in February 1862 in Griffin, GA said L.H. Crowell enlisted and served in Company H, 53rd GA Regim of Vols. in the Confederate army for 3 years and w months; that he was wounded in the right hip in October 1862 by a piece of shell, and was sent to the hospital and afterwards worked in the Government shops at Macon, GA until the close of the war, that I was a member of the same compnay, Co. H. 53rd Reg of GA vol; that said L.H. Crowell made a faithful ? that I have no interest in the recovery of a pension by this applicant. Sworn Sept 27, 1909 R.H. Crowell, applicant for pension under Section 1254 Code: Right leg about 1 1/2 inches shortened & very much ematiated. Rigid contraction of palmar muscles of right foot drawing down all the toes. The second toe is drawn completely under palmar surface of foot. He is very feeble & infirm and totally unable to ear a support at any calling or occupation. A.H. Black, M.D. J. M.
