Fletcher dorothy010@ameritech.net September 27, 2003, 12:11 pm Virginia Crilley Mrs. Mary Cordelia Evans celebrated her 100th birthday April 7, 1979. The occassion was marked by a family get-together on Sunday at the National Guard Armory in Thomaston, Ga. Mrs. Evans was the daughter of the late Rev. George W. and Maggie Vaughn. She married the late Preston L. Evans of Heffin, Al. November 8, 1899. The couple had 12 children. Two died in infancy, and the other ten are still living. They are; Mae Kelly Joyner of Chattanooga, Tenn., Essie McCraven of Oxford, Al., Mrs.Bessie Hammonds of Oxforf, Al., Mrs. Jessie Jane Coleman of Crossville, Tn., Will Evans of Oxford, Al., L. B. Evans of Heflin, Al., Mrs. Pearl Kent of Helfin, Al., Mrs. Ruth Hammond, Mrs. Grace Gaskil, all of Thomaston. Mrs. Evans has lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Grace and Edd Gaskil of Thomaston, Ga. for the last 24 years. She is able to be up and around in the house and to take care of most of her personal needs. Her eyesight and hearing are not good, but her mind is sharp and she enjoys talking about the past. Mrs. Evans has 26 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, and 10 great great granchildren. She now resides at the Cleburne County Nursing Home.
