Apr. 2, 2004 CHILDS Funeral services for Deacon Kelvin O'Neal Childs, 38, of Edna Road will be held Thursday, April 1, 2004 from Macedonia Baptist Church with Pastor Eddie Johnson Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery. Deacon Childs died Saturday, March 27, 2004 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Bentley & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Deacon Childs was born in Thomaston to Mrs. Shirley Johnson Childs and the late Mr. Milwood Denson on Feb. 1, 1966. The precious Lord took O'Neal's hand on Saturday, March 27, 2004 and led him on home. He was a 1984 graduate of R.E. Lee High School. He also attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus. On Nov. 23, 1993, he was united in holy matrimony to the former Ms. Linneida Cunningham of Thomaston. His commitment to Christ began at an early age when he joined the Concord Baptist Church in Woodland. He later moved his membership to Macedonia Baptist Church in Thomaston. At Macedonia he was ordained as a deacon and served as Chairman of the Deacons Ministry. He devoted his life to Christ and worked diligently to serve the Lord. Deacon Childs was a loving husband, father, son, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. He was very devoted to his wife and children. Those who knew him are thankful for the 38 years, one month, three weeks, five days, nine hours and 45 minutes that the Lord allowed him to be with loved ones and the community. Left to cherish his memory is a devoted family which includes his wife, Linneda Childs and three children, Atalya Janay Childs, Kiara Sherrel Childs and Xavier Denzel Cunningham; his mother, Shirley Johnson Childs and step father, Bobby Lee Childs; mother and father-in-law, Linda Cunningham and Johnny (Dorothy) Cunningham; grandmother, Nettie W. Johnson; brothers and sisters, Lamar (Denise) Childs, Kent (Natalie) Childs, Paula (Philip) Childs, Lukienna Diggs, Sherry (Carl) Fagan, Debra Reeves, Mildred (Eddie) Felipa, Alfred (Wendy) Denson, Laurette (Kelvin) Cox, Sherry Parks, Dennis (Cassie) Worthy, Marvin McGill, Susan (Carl) Trice, Michael (Heavenly) Denson, Lamar Denson, Tawana (Tilson) Searcy, Lisa M. Denson, Znobbie (Curtis) Harris, Peggy Collier and Diane King; sister and brothers-in-law, Sheena (Jeff) Williams, Reggie Cunningham and VanDance Cunningham; a devoted friend, Deacon Willie B. Harris whom he loved as a father and affectionately called "Pop;" aunts and uncles, James Johnson, Elsie Brown and Emily Bedell and a host of other uncles, aunts, cousins and friends that will miss him dearly. COLQUITT Funeral services for Mr. Augustus Boyt "Gus" Colquitt, 95, of Edwards Road, Yatesville were held Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 11 a.m. at Pine View Baptist Church with Ann Carol Daniel, the Rev. Steve Maguire and the Rev. Franklin Gibson officiating. Burial followed in Yatesville Methodist Church Cemetery. Mr. Colquitt died Monday, March 29, 2004 at his residence. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Colquitt was the son of the late Mat Mason Colquitt and Annie Perry Boyt Colquitt. He was born August 21, 1908. He was a native of Upson County and the oldest citizen of Yatesville. He was a master machinist and master cabinet-maker. He was retired from the Macon Machine Shop of Georgia Steel Erectors. Mr. Colquitt was the oldest member of Pine View Baptist Church in Barnesville where he was a life deacon. He was a Master Mason in Pinta Lodge #88, Free and Accepted Masons in Barnesville. "Mr. Gus" was a beloved figure in Yatesville, delighting people with his hobby of crafting reproductions of old structures, some of which can be seen at the Yatesville Library. His work includes a replica of the old grist mill and Yatesville School. He used his skills as a machinist to build a working miniature train which he drove for many years in the Chitlin' Hoedown Parade, entertaining children afterwards with free rides around town. Mr. Gus played the banjo and was considered the town historian. He had an amazing memory for people and dates. In 1998, on his 90th birthday, the City of Yatesville held 'Gus Colquitt Appreciation Day,' celebrating the life of "Mr. Gus" who had given so much to the City of Yatesville. He was presented with a golf cart and spent many happy days 'carting' around town visiting friends. He will be missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing "Mr. Gus." Survivors include his daughter, Mrs. Don (Ann) Page of Yatesville; three grandsons, Mr. Hardy (Kellie) Wheeless of Zebulon, Mr. Michael Colquitt (Elisa) Wheeless of Meansville and Dr. Donald A. (Joan) Page, Jr. of Marietta and six great grandchildren. DENNIS Mr. Alonzo "Bind Man" Dennis, 71, of Woodland, died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 in Tampa, Fla. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date by Harper's Funeral Home of Manchester. EDWARDS Funeral services for Mr. Jere Alan Edwards, 38, of Hannah's Mill Road will be held Thursday, April 1, 2004 at 11 a.m. from Mountain View Baptist Church with Dr. Rex King and the Rev. Wesley Hunt officiating. Mr. Edwards died Monday, March 29, 2004 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Edwards was born Aug. 29, 1965 in Thomaston. He was a member of Mountain View Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Bobby W. Edwards, grandparents, Ellis and Addie Thompson and grandmother, Pauline Edwards. Survivors include his wife, Michelle Edwards of Thomaston; daughter, Lisa Marie Edwards of Thomaston; son, Jere Austin Edwards of Thomaston; mother, Laura Thompson Edwards of Thomaston; sister, Regina Coppersmith of Thomaston and half sister, Toni Henson of Arlington, Texas. Visitation will be held tonight from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. GARNER Graveside services for Miss Lottie Mae Garner, 74, of Avenue F were held Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 11 a.m. in Upson Memorial Gardens with Dwain Penn officiating. Miss Garner died Tuesday, March 30, 2004 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Coggins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Miss Garner was born in Pike County but lived in Thomaston for several years. She was a member of East Thomaston Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. John Garner and Mr. Willie Garner. She is survived by her cousin, Jeanette Fleming of Thomaston. HAMMOCK Mrs. Pauline McElroy Hammock, 81, of Roland Road, died Thursday, April 1, 2004 at Providence Health Care. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date by Coggins Funeral Home. LONG Funeral services for Mr. Holmes E. "Buddy" Long, 87, of Sunnyside Road will be held Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home with the Rev. James King officiating. Burial will follow in Hendricks Church Cemetery. Mr. Long died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Long was a native of Upson County. He was born, April 20, 1916, son of the late, Holmes Clemons Long and Dallie Bea Bassett Long. He was retired from the Thomaston Mills Division of Thomaston Mills as a fixer after 38 years of service. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Shirley Stephens of Thomaston and Mrs. Kathryn L. Eggleton of Woodbury; two sons, Mr. Stanley F. Long of Thomaston and Mr. Henry H. Long of Stockbridge; a sister, Mrs. Burdie L. Brannon of Thomaston; 11 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren also survive. Visitation will be held tonight from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. MONDS Funeral services for Mrs. Annie Ruth Monds, 70, of Prater Street will be held Monday, April 5, 2004 at 1 p.m. from Friendship Baptist Church in the Lincoln Park Community. Rev. Jimmy Lyons is pastor and the Rev. Barney Govan will officiate. Burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery. Mrs. Monds died Monday, March 29, 2004 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Survivors include three children, Bruce Monds of College Park, Charlie Zack Monds, Jr. of Thomaston, Tyrone Monds of Newark, N.J.; two grandchildren, Clifton Beckley and Asya Monds; a sister, Mary (Rev. Barney) Govan of Pass Christian, Miss.; a nephew, Jeramy Govan of Gulfport, Miss.; two nieces, Venice Henderson of Mobile, Ala. and Lasundra Govan of Jackson, Miss.; and a host of other relatives and friends who will miss her. MOONEY Funeral services for Mrs. Gertrude McDaniel Mooney, 72, of Hampton, formerly of Thomaston will be held Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 2 p.m. at Mowell & Son Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Camp Memorial, Hwy 54, East of Fayetteville. Mrs. Mooney died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Southern Regional Hospital. Mowell & Son Funeral Home of Fayetteville is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include her husband, Floyd Mooney of Hampton; two daughters, Sharon Mooney Pugh of Douglasville and Regina Pugh of Juliette; sister, Eula Storey of Thomaston; half brother, Vernon McDaniel of Kernville, N.C.; two granddaughters, Amy Pugh, of Douglasville and Holly Pugh of Juliette. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m.m and 6 until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. SMITH Funeral services for Mrs. Millie K. Smith, 98, formerly of Thomaston were held Monday, March 29, 2004 at 1 p.m. from the Raymond Henry Bentley Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Otis King officiating. Burial followed in the Gatlin's Cemetery of Thomaston. Mrs. Smith died Thursday, March 25, 2004 at Pine Hill Nursing Center in Byromville, Ga. Bentley & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. "Grannie" was born on December 25, 1905, to the late Mr. and Mrs. Killings in Cuthbert, Randolph County, Ga. At an early age she worked for a pepper plant. After the Lord stepped into her life she joined the Woodbury Miracle Fellowship Center in Woodbury where she served faithfully until her health began to fail. "Grannie" was a loving and outspoken person. She enjoyed making home-made quilts. She was always willing to lend a helping hand. She was united in holy matrimony to the late Sherman Woodard. To this union one child was born, who preceded her in death, Christine Woodard Sullivan. She later united in holy matrimony to the late Grover Smith. She also had three grandchildren who preceded her in death, Clarence Sullivan, Ida Mae Sullivan and Randy Joe Sullivan. On Thursday, March 25, 2004 God called "Grannie" home. She leaves to cherish her memories her six grandchildren, Sherman (Christine) Sullivan, Robert Sullivan, Diane Sullivan, Sandra Sullivan and two that she held dear, Mr. Billy Ray Sullivan and Ms. TeRiser Sullivan, all of Thomaston; 10 great grandchildren, 15 great great grandchildren; a niece, Mrs. Catherine Killings of Cuthbert; a nephew, Deacon Aldine Woodard of Thomaston; a niece-in-law, Barbara Woodard of Detroit, Mich. and a host of relatives and friends who mourn her passing. THOMPSON. Funeral services for Deacon Melvin Thompson Sr., 71, of Woodbury will be held Saturday, April 3, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church in Woodbury with Pastor J.D. Walker officiating. Burial will follow in Walker Memorial Gardens. Deacon Thompson died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at West Georgia Hospice Center in LaGrange. Bentley & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include his wife, Sara Carter Thompson of Woodbury; two daughters and three sons, Ms. Sara A. Thompson of Tampa, Fla., Mrs. Virginia (Christopher) Carter of Hinesville, Mr. Melvin Thompson Jr. of Warner Robins, Mr. Lonnie (Philicia) Thompson of Murfreesboro, Tenn. and Mr. Davis (Regina) Thompson of Savannah; 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren; a sister and two brothers, Mrs. Annie R. Passmore of Homestead, Fla., Mr. Richard (Debbie) Thompson of Luthersville and Mr. Emmit Thompson of Woodbury; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mr. Roy L. (Lee) Slaton of Atlanta, Mrs. Mattie (Robert) Whitehead of Key West, Fla., Ms. Addie Myers and Ms. Annie K. Ladd both of Homestead, Fla. and Ms. Annie M. Slaton of Atlanta; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives who will mourn his passing.
