John W. Atwater died at his home in this city Monday morning at 3 o'clock. His body was laid to rest in Glenwood cemetery Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock after a short funeral service at the home conducted by Rev. J. M. Tumlin. The deceased had been in declining health for the past several years. He had been confined to his home the past 6 years but had only been in bed since Nov. 26 of last year. Mr. Atwater was 84 years of age at the time of his death and had lived in Upson Co. all his life. For years he was a minister of the gospel in the Methodist church and only gave up preaching when his health failed. He was also a member of the Masonic order. The deceased had been married twice. His first wife was Miss Martha Oneal and of this union nine children were born, seven whom are now living. There were five daughters; Mrs. John C. Fox of Norman Park; Mrs. W. F. Matthews of Talbot Co.; Mrs. W. L. Pounds, of Yatesville; Mrs. J. W. Bailey, of Mountville; and Miss Alice Atwater; the last named two of whom are dead. There are the following sons: G. E. Atwater and John P. Atwater, of Thomaston; C. M. Atwater, and E. B. Atwater of Macon. Mr. Atwater is survived by his second wife who was Miss Sallie Butts.
