Hubert Flanagan, and Dr. Robert W. Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Glenwood Cemetery. Mr. Hightower died Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002 in Augusta, Ga.. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Hightower was Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Thomaston Mills, Inc., a position from which he retired on March 1, 1986. His entire business career was devoted to the management of the company. Thomaston Mills had been a way of life and a family legacy that began with his grandfather, Robert Edgar Hightower, Sr. in 1900. At the time of his retirement, "Mr. George" was serving in his 49th year of active service to the company. He was born on March 17, 1916, in Thomaston, the son of William Harrison and Annie Turner Hightower. Mr. Hightower attended grammar and high school at R.E. Lee Institute. He continued his education at the Georgia Institute of Technology. "Mr. George" graduated in 1937 with a B.S. degree in Textile Engineering. While at Georgia Tech, he was a member of ODK, ANAK and PHI/PSI honor societies and the Sigma Chi social fraternity. Upon completion of his college education, he became associated with Thomaston Mills in Oct. 1937, in the Engineering Department. Over the next three and one-half years he gained a sound working knowledge of the company and its manufacturing processes. In April 1941, MR. HIGHTOWER ENTERED THE SERVICE OF THE U.S. NAVY AND SERVED WITH DISTINCTION. HE SERVED FOUR AND A HALF YEARS ON ACTIVE DUTY AND RETIRED FROM THE U.S. NAVAL RESERVES WITH THE RANK OF COMMANDER. He returned to work at Thomaston Mills upon discharge from active duty and was elected to the Board of Directors of the company on Dec. 6, 1945. Continuing to grow and develop his executive skills and abilities, "Mr. George" was elected Assistant Vice President on Oct. 9, 1946. On March 6, 1947, he was elected Vice President and served in that capacity until his election as Executive Vice President and Secretary of the company on Oct. 8, 1965. On Oct. 3, 1950, he was elected to the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. On Oct. 19, 1974, Mr. Hightower was elected President and Treasurer of the company, the position in which he served until his election as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer on March 1, 1982. From his first day on the job in 1937 until his retirement, George H. Hightower, Sr. demonstrated a high quality of leadership that earned him the respect of all who know him. During his tenure as President, Mr. Hightower led the company through some of its most dynamic periods. Despite the troubles that faced the textile industry during these ten years, he continued to enlarge and expand operations. He instigated the modernization of plant facilities, the building of the Pike Division and directed the expansion of company sales to an all time record of $145,432,000 in 1984. Like his family that preceded him as the leaders of the company, "Mr. George" exhibited great confidence in the textile industry and in the employees of Thomaston Mills, Inc. He proved right in displaying this confidence. Mr. Hightower held numerous positions of responsibility in the business world. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of the C&S Bank of Thomaston and a member of the Board of Directors of Community Enterprises, Inc. His leadership was recognized by the Georgia Textile Manufactures Association which elected him to the Board of Directors in 1939 and to President in 1957. He was currently an ex-officio director of GTMA. He served on the Board of Directors of the American Textile Manufacturers Institute and was a former chairman of the ATMI Safety & Health Committee. He was a past state delegate to the National Cotton Council. Mr. Hightower was always concerned about the progress of the people of Thomaston and Upson County. He helped advance many civic, educational, religious and other worthwhile projects in the community. He served as a Director of Community Enterprises, Inc.: a member of the Administrative Board of the First United Methodist Church; a Kiwanian; a member of the Pete Thurston American Legion Post; a member of Thomaston Country Club; and a supporter of Boy and Girl Scout work. He was a member of the Planning and Building Committee of the First United Methodist Church. In keeping with progressive leaders, he placed special emphasis on education. He diligently promoted the work of his alma mater Georgia Tech, and our area institutions of higher learning - Gordon College and Upson Tech. He was one of the founding directors of the Upson Area Vocational Technical School and served as Co- chairman of the first Board of Directors of the school. "Mr. George" was a Trustee of the Georgia Tech Foundation, Inc., past president of the Gordon College Foundation, and served as president and Director of the Textile Education Foundation, Inc. Mr. Hightower believed that Christian principles, enthusiasm, honesty and frugality are the keys to success. He was uncompromising where principles of right and wrong were involved. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, "Mr. George" was married to the late Dorothy Watson of Moultrie. George, Jr., their son, resides in Thomaston, and works for 1888 Mills, Inc. Their daughter, Jane, resides in Augusta, Ga., with her husband, Dr. Jim Tippett and their two children, John and Dorothy. A fitting tribute to Mr. Hightower was given when he was honored by Georgia Tech's Textile School in 1984 and presented the prestigious "Friend Award" in recognition of his outstanding service to Georgia Tech, his community and his company. Dr. Alvin Turbank, Dean of the School of Textile Engineering, had these words to say, "This award represents the highest recognition that we can give from this school to any particular individual. You have heard it said when E.F. Hutton talks, people listen. When Mr. George Hightower talks, we listen because he carries words of wisdom, sage advice and great counsel." George H. Hightower, Sr. had a great family tradition to live up to, and he did so with distinction and honor. The continued returns from his investments in his company, his family and his community will be a memorial to him. He was truly a "friend" to us all.
