Mr. Bell was born in Marion County. but lived in Thomaston for many years. HE SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORP. Mr. Bell was a firefighter and retired from the Thomaston Fire Department as senior captain after more than 35 years of service. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jackie Hill Bell of Thomaston; two sons, Mr. Chris (Rhonda) Bell of Thomaston and Mr. Jason (Mandy) Bell of Woodland; a daughter, Mrs. Justine (Frankie) Greene of Thomaston and five grandchildren. CALLAHAN Funeral services for Mrs. Ruth Bales, Callahan, 92, of The Rock will be held Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004 at 2 p.m. at North Church Street Church of Christ with Monty Eason officiating. Burial will follow in South View Cemetery. Mrs. Callahan died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004 in Meansville at the home of her granddaughter, Jan Ogletree. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Callahan was a native of Putnam County, Ga. and a resident of Upson County for most of her life. She retired as a sewing machine operator from the William Carter Co. in Barnesville. She was a member of the North Church Street Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughter, Mrs. Nellie Bethune of Thomaston; a sister, Mrs. Nora Gabriel of Thomaston; seven grandchildren, Jimmy Bethune, Kim Bethune, Gary Bethune, Jan Ogletree, Judy Rogers, Gloria Gatlin and Joanie Winters, all of Thomaston; 14 great grandchildren and 17 great great grandchildren. McCRARY Funeral services for Mr. Will Carson McCrary, 72, of Brookwood Drive will be held Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home with the Rev. Joey Smith officiating. HE SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY 187th AIRBORNE DIVISION DURING THE KOREAN WAR and was a member of the VFW Post of Thomaston. He retired from Thomaston Mills after more than 34 years of service as a plumber. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Judith Youngblood McCrary of Thomaston; a daughter, Mrs. Hollis Katrina (Keith) Carter of Thomaston; a brother, Mr. Lamar McCrary of Thomaston; three sisters, Mrs. Reba (Ron) Coates, Mrs. Betty Holloway and Mrs. Doris Weems, all of Thomaston; and a grandson, Mr. James Carson (Jamie) Carter of Thomaston. Davis, 86, of Winter Park, Fla. was held Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Winter Park. Col. Davis died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004 at his residence. Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home of Orlando, Fla. was in charge of arrangements. Col. Davis was born Feb. 23, 1917 in Athens, Ga. He received his BA in 1938 from the University of Georgia and his MA in 1963 from George Washington University. HE RETIRED TO FLORIDA IN 1970 AFTER SERVING FOR 30 YEARS IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY. Beginning his military career as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Cavalry Regiment in 1940, he subsequently served in the European Theater in World War II. He was one of the last surviving members of the forces that liberated the Dachau concentration camp in Germany. He attended the U.S. Army War College and was the U.S. military attache to Laos; Chief of Intelligence, Berlin, Germany and recipient of the Bronze Star. He was a member of the Winter Park Racquet Club, Sigma Chi Fraternity, University Club of Winter Park, past President of the Circumnavigators Club and Delta Sigma Pi. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Hightower Davis and his sister, Catherine Davis Stanley. Survivors include his children, H. Stewart Davis of Thomaston, George Hightower Davis of Hamden, Conn., Robert MacDonald Davis of Orlando, Fla. and Ann Davis Thompson of Marietta; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Mr. Fordham worked for Thomaston Mills, The William Carter Company, BP Oil, and retired in 1997 from the M. Goldstein & Sons company of Griffin. He also served as an umpire and coach for the Silvertown Basketball team and Thomaston Little League. Monday, February 09, 2004 BLOUNT Mr. Jerry Allen Blount, 66, of Pobiddy Road died Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date by Coggins Funeral Home. Mr. Blount was a native of Upson County. HE SERVED HIS COUNTRY IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY. He was retired on disability but worked and had worked as an iron worker for many years prior to retirement. Mr. Blount was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his sister, Mrs. Ann (Billy) Franklin of Thomaston; three nieces and a nephew. Mr. Evans was born on Feb. 25, 1947 to the late Mr. Jack Evans Sr. and the late Ms. Della Napier in Thomaston. He attended Pine Grove Baptist Church and New Life Church. On May 21, 1970 Jack was united in Holy Matrimony to Mrs. Mary Raines Evans and unto this union two children were born. Jack received his education at Cunningham High School in Yatesville. Having the love for working on cars, Jack attended Flint River Technical College where he received his diploma in auto mechanics. HE ENLISTED IN THE ARMY ON OCT. 26, 1966 TO SERVE HIS COUNTRY AND SERVED IN THE VIETNAM WAR FROM SEPTEMBER 1967 to SEPTEMBER 1968. HE ALSO SERVED IN THE NATIONAL GUARD AS A STAFF SERGEANT. Our Beloved Deaconess Pauline Raines Braswell joined God's Calvary of Angels on Feb. 6, 2004. Born on Feb. 3, 1940 to her deceased parents, Thomas Van and Cora Lee (Duncan) Raines Sr. She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Deacon George Braswell who preceded her in death. To this union seven children were born. One preceded her in death, Kenneth Braswell. At an early age, Pauline joined the Olive Grove Baptist Church, she was a faithful member of the Senior Choir. She attended Crawford Co. Training School. She was retired from Martha Mills Inc. Deaconess Braswell was a faithful member of the Senior Choir. Mrs. Leonard was born in Lamar County. She was the daughter of the late Missy Jackson. As a young woman she met and married the late Mr. S.B. Leonard and to this union four children were born. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Mrs. Leonard was a member of the Saint Mary A.M.E. Church were she served faithfully until she suffered a debilitating illness. After her illness she continued to support her church financially. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sheila Woodard. Survivors include her children, Ms. Jeanette Leonard, Mrs. Johnette (George) Hugley, Mrs. Linda Leonard, Mr. Samuel Leonard and Mr. James Kovat Leonard, all of Thomaston; a step-son, Mr. Michael Hobbs of Thomaston; a play-son that she loved as her own, Mr. J. Mr. Raines was a native and former resident of Thomaston, born Nov. 23, 1930. He was the son of the late Robert Holmes Raines and Lelia Belle Davis Raines. He was a retired real estate broker, having operated Raines Realty Co. He was a 1948 graduate of R.E. Lee Institute and an Army veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Raines was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Jean B. Raines of Athens; two daughters, Mrs. Edith Ann Raines Garrett and Caroline Raines, both of Athens; a granddaughter, Morgan Raines Garrett of Athens; and a number of nieces and nephews. Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her parents, Buck and Lucille Edmondson Yeoman. She enjoyed doing crafts, painting and gardening. She loved animals and was a good friend to everyone. Mrs. Smith died Friday, Feb. 6, 2004 at her residence at Sunrise Assisted Living in Atlanta. Mrs. Smith was a native Atlantan and was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Benjamin Terry Smith. She attended the North Avenue Presbyterian School which later became the Westminster schools and graduated from Finch School in New York City. She was a member of the Cathedral of St. Phillip, Atlanta Forward Arts Foundation, the Junior League of Atlanta, Planters Garden Club, the Capital City Club and former member of the Board of the Atlanta Girl Scouts. She and her husband owned Windsweep Farm in Thomaston where they raised registered polled Hereford cattle and had several champions. Survivors include a son, Benjamin Terry (Katie) Smith Jr. of Thomaston; daughter, Eleanor S. He attended Virginia Military Institute prior to SERRVING IN WORLD WAR II and graduated after the war from Georgia Tech as a civil engineer. He was married to his high school sweetheart Lurline Turner Smith for 58 years. MR. SMITH SERVED WITH THE U.S. ARMY. 104th INFANTRY DIV., RECEIVING A BATTLEFIELD COMMISSION IN FRANCE. A PURPLE HEART RECIPIENT, HE ATTAINED THE RANK OF COLONEL IN THE U.S. ARMY RESERVE. A general contractor and developer in the Atlanta area, he was active in a number of civic and community organizations. He rose through the ranks of the Kiwanis International to serve as its International President during 1979 through 1980. Mr. Smith was a life long golfer and member of the Cherokee Town and Country Club. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Leila (Dick) Doll of Victor, N.Y.; a son and daughter-in-law, Angie (Mark) A. Smith III of Atlanta; three grandchildren, Alan Smith, Angelynn Doll and DJ Doll. STRICKLAND Mrs. Annie Francis Lewis Strickland, 63, of Potemkin Village, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004 at her residence.
