Thomaston Cotton mill Tragedy

The Thomaston Times gives the following account of an unfortunate tragedy
occurring at the cotton mills near that city recently:

A young white man named Calvin Koon was shot and killed by the night watchman at
the Thomaston Cotton Mills Monday night about nine o’clock near the gate to the
mill grounds.  There were several witnesses to the killing and their stories
vary but is alleged that Koon was raising a disturbance near the gate when the
watchman, Robert Raines, came and endeavored to quiet him.  Instead of quieting
it is said that he became more boisterous and when the watchman attempted to
stop him he began backing off and ran his hand toward his hip pocket in the
attempt, as the watchman thought to draw a pistol.  It was then that the
watchman shot him with his pistol killing him.

A warrant was sworn out later for the arrest of the watchman and he was arrested
brought to Thomaston and has since been under guard in the courthouse, there
being no room for him in the county jail because of its inadequate equipment.  A
commitment trial was held at the courthouse Friday p.m. at 1:30 o’clock
according to present arrangements at which time evidence in the case will be
heard and it will determined whether the accused shall remain under guard or be
allowed his freedom.

Koon was a married man having a wife and infant child.  He had been working at
the Thomaston Cotton Mills it is said about seven years.
