Kennedy, 66 year old Atlanta businessman and civic leader died Saturday, March 19 at his home. A private memorial service is planned. Mr. Kennedy married Virginia Hightower of Thomaston in 1937. He served on the board of Thomaston Mills from 1953 to 1980 and was president of Kennedy Properties, a board member and vice-president of the Davidson-Kennedy Co., a board member of the First National Bank of Atlanta, chairman of the bank's Trust Committee and a member of its Executive Committee. He served on the board of the Atlanta Music Festival which he was president from 1963 to 1973. From 1963 to 1965, Mr. Kennedy was president of the Central Atlanta Association, a forefunner of Central Atlanta Progress. Mr. Kennedy was a board member of the Georgian Club and past president of both the Capital City Club and the Peachtree Golf Club. He was a member of Augusta National Golf Club and the Piedmont Driving Club. Mr. Kennedy was born April 21, 1916, in Greenville, S.C., the son of Jane Thornton and Alfred Thornton. The family moved to Atlanta in 1918. He attended Episcopal High School in Virginia. The Citadel in Charleston, S.C. and later the University of Georgia where he was a member of Chi Phi fraternity. During World War 11, Mr. Kennedy served as a U.S. Navy lieutenant. After the war, he went into business with his uncle, Albert Thornton, as manager of the 10 Pryor Street Building. Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters; Mrs. William W. Epstein of Atlanta and Mrs. Edna Thornton of Santa Fe, N.M., son Alfred Kennedy, Jr. of Atlanta, and brother, Thornton Kennedy of Atlanta.
