This was simply a way of stating the fact that they were dead. So we say today, that Uncle James Anderson Means lived to a good old age and was gathered to his fathers. He departed this life on last Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1897 after an illness of about 10 minutes. The machinery of life was run down and stopped without a struggle or pain. Mr. Anderson Means has lived long and well and has a long encourse of friends and relatives to mourn his departure. He was nearly 77 years old, was born in Upson County, but has lived on the place were he was living when he died for 50 years, has been an official member of the church for 50 years and was a charter member of Fredonia for 44 years. His life has been one of untiring devotion to the cause of his Master and he was always ready to do what he could for advancement of his kingdon [sic] among men. One of the fitting acts, because it was the closing one, was his attendance at the Annual Conference at Fredonia, which closed two days before he died. He enjoyed the seesions [sic] of the business meetings and especially the preaching services. He was at home in a religious service and it can also be said of this man that he was not a narrow bigot. Where the world of God was preached he was there to enjoy it and help by his prayers to the other hosts of the Lord to pull down the strong holds of sin. James Anderson Means had 10 children born to him, eight of whom survive him. He was the brother of Mr. J. W. Means who died in this county and is survived by a sister, Mrs. Jane Elliott. His friends are many as was seen by the large concourse that attended his funeral at Fredonia Church, Wednesday, conducted by Rev. C. S. McDaniel of Atlanta who has known Bro. Means forty- four years and has been his pastor for 20 years. But he has gone from us to await the resurrection morning when we shall see him again. The Christians hope bridges the grave, and death unites the saints on the other shore. May we all be ready when the Master calleth. Barnesville News-Gazette, 11 November 1897, page 4 Mr. Anderson Means Dead. Tuesday evening, Mr. Anderson Means died very suddenly at his home some miles from Barnesville in Monroe county. The cause of his death is supposed to be heart trouble. Mr. Means was well known here and was about seventy-five years old. He has many relatives and friends throughout this section who mourn his death. Additional Comments: James Anderson Means was born 22 February 1821 and was the son of James Means, Jr. and Mary Ann (McKenzie) Means. He married Elizabeth Ann (Allen) Means on 18 December 1843 in Crawford Co., GA, although the marriage was also recorded in Upson Co. as having occurred on 23 December 1843 in Upson Co, GA. The death date of November 9, 1897 came from his tombstone at Fredonia Congregational Church in Monroe Co., GA. Additionally, notice that the second obituary was printed on 11 November 1897. Therefore, the December 11 1897 death date in the first obituary was probably a misprint or error.
