Dr. Cotney died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2003 at the St. Joseph's Hospital in Atlanta. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Dr. Cotney was a native of Thomaston, Ga. He was born June 17, 1926. He graduated from R. E. Lee Institute in 1944. Dr. COTNEY SERVED IN THE U.S. NAVY DURING WORLD WAR II IN THE PACIFIC THEATER ON BOARD THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER LEXINGTON, WHICH WAS THE FIRST CAPITOL SHIP IN TOKEYO BAY AFTER THE JAPANESE SURRENDER. After being honorably discharged from the service he attended West Georgia College, North Georgia College and Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He recevied the degree Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer College in 1957. Shortley afterward, he and his wife, Hazel (also a Palmer graduate), sat and passed the Georgia Chiropractic Board and were issued a license to practice in the state. They began their careers together on Nov. 1, 1957. Dr. Cotney practiced in Thomaston for over 41 years, retiring in 1998. He was an active member of the Georgia Chiropractic Association and was awarded Lifetime Membership in 1995. He served in several positions, including vice-president and board of directors. He was a member of the American Chiropractic Association, the Palmer Alumni Association and a member and past chairman of the Upson County Democratic Party. Dr. Cotney was an active member of First Baptist Church of Thomaston since 1958 and a member of the builder's Sunday School Class. He and his wife Hazel had just celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary on Jan. 29. He had often said his greatest achievement in life was his three children and their families. Survivors include his wife, Dr. Hazel Caldwell Cotney; three children, Mr. Thomas Marvin (Kathleen) Cotney Jr. of Atlanta, Dr. Mark Edward (Shirley Ann) Cotney of Thomaston and Mrs. Catherine Cotney (Greg) Harvill of Marietta; and six grandchildren, Stacey Kathleen Horton of Washington, DC, Megan Tyler Cotney and Thomas Marvin Cotney III, both of Atlanta, Anna Logan Cotney and Davis Allen Cotney, both of Thomaston and Mrs. Brittany Harvill (Corey) Leggett of Kennesaw. She and Mr. Long made their home for 50 years in Jacksonville, Fla., where they were members of the Murray Hill Methodist Church. Mrs. Long was the retired office manager of Furchgott's Department Store. She was also a receptionist for Bisbee, Baldwin & Mason Realty Company and a tax escrow clerk. She was a member of the Salvia Garden Club in Jacksonville. Charles Bennett officiating. Burial will follow in South View Cemetery. Mrs. Moreland died Monday, March 17, 2003 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Coggins Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Moreland was a native of Upson County. She was born on Feb. 4, 1924 to the late Morgan Lee Ballard and Della Hamby Ballard. She worked for over 20 years at Thomaston Mills and was store manager at the Dixie Discount Store in Barnesville. Mrs. Moreland was a member of Wilson's Chapel FreeWill Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Leonard Bruce Moreland of Thomaston. Survivors include her sons, Mr. David (Alice) L. Moreland of Barnesville, Mr. Randy (Kathy) J. Moreland of Thomaston and Mr. Richard (Sandra) Moreland of Acworth; a daughter, Mrs. Mary Jean Caldwell of Zebulon; sister, Mrs. Vesthi Wells of Thomaston, seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Reid was a native of Upson County. He was employed with Thomaston Mills where he worked as a loom technician for many years.
