Mrs. Pope was born in Canton, Ga. and was a graduate of Bass High School in Atlanta. She and her former husband, John I. Pope, II moved from Atlanta to Hawaii while HE SERVED IN THE U.S. NAVY IN THE EARLY 1960'S. They moved to Thomaston in 1966 to work with Thomaston Mills. Charle' enjoyed interior design and their former home on Hightower Street was once featured in Southern Living Magazine. mrs. Pope had recently served as Office Manager for Christian Ministries Hospice and was a member of the Thomaston First Presbyterian Church. One of her favorite things to do was spend time with her grandchildren, to whom she was known as "Mema.". Survivors include her sons, John I. Pope, III of Sandy Springs, William S. Pope of Canton, Benjamin N. Pope of Thomaston, and Stephen C. Childs officiating. Mrs. Dunaway died Sunday, May 5, 2002 at the Anderson Area Medical Center in Anderson, S.C. The McDougald Funeral Home of Anderson, S.C. was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Dunaway was born in Anderson, S.C. on Dec. 28, 1926. She was the daughter of the late Teasley Andrew Moorhead and the late Willie Mae Pruitt Moorhead. She was a homemaker and a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Anderson where she was a member of Circle No. 6. Mrs. Dunaway was a graduate of Anderson Girls High School and a past member of the Garden Trail Garden Club, Anderson Woman's Club and Embroiders Guild. In 1986, the Mary Ann Moorhead Dunaway Scholarship was established in her honor at Columbia College in recognition of her four daughters graduation from the College. Marie Lewis MURPHY Graveside memorial services for Ms. Marie Lewis Murphy, 84, of Pompano Beach, Fla., will be held Saturday, May 18, 2002 at 1 p.m. in the Glenwood Cemetery with the Rev. Donald R. Jones officiating. Ms. Murphy died April 8, 2002 at Hialeah Hospital Hospice in Hialeah, Fla. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A Florida native, Ms. Murphy was born in 1917 in Tampa, Fla. to the Rev. and Mrs. J.D. Lewis, both Methodist missionaries. Her father, James Farrell Lewis was an officer in the Second Georgia Regiment during the Civil War. Her mother, Florence Harris Lewis, was a distinguished member of the DAR in Thomaston for many years. She was the niece of the late Courtney Lewis and Tommy Lewis who served with honor in France during World War I. Courtney and Tom Lewis ran the Lewis Brothers business out of Thomaston for many years. Ms. Murphy graduated from Kissimmee High School in 1936 and from Florida State College for Women in 1939. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse in the state's tobacco country before World War II. IN 1944 SHE JOINED THE U.S. NAVY. SHE WENT ON TO EARN A MASTER'S DEGREE IN EDUCATION FROM DUKE UNIVERSITY. SHE THEN MARRIED AND LIVED IN PAMPANO BEACH, FLA. Ms. Murphy was a world and American history teacher at Pampano Beach Senior High School for more than two decades, starting in 1947. She was an avid reader and donor to several charities. Survivors include her son, Mr. Lewis F. Murphy of Coconut Grove, Fla., a sister, Mrs. Carolyn Prowse of Titusville, Fla., and grandchildren, Brandy Keenan, Logan Murphy and Devon Murphy. May 20, 2002 James Ashley SHIRLEY Funeral services for Mr. James Ashley Shirley, 82, of Andrews Drive, were held Monday, May 20, 2002 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home with the Rev.
