Survivors include her husband, Mr. Joe Alford of Barnesville; a step-son, Mr. Melvin (Lucille) Buffin of Thomaston; two grandchildren; five great- grandchildren; brothers, Mr. Roscoe Tyree Wyche of Savannah and Mr. Frank Herman (Frances) Wyche of Barnesville; sisters, Mrs. Mable (Rev. Funeral services for Mrs. Irene Stalnaker BENFORD, 78, of Savannah, will be held Monday, May 5, 2003 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home with Elder Wayne Gibbs and Elder W. H. Durrence officiating. Mrs. Benford died Wednesday, April 30, 2003 following a brief illness. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Benford had lived in Savannah, Ga. for the past 34 years. She worked as a nurse at St. Joseph's Hospital for 22 years before retiring in 1993. She faithfully attended Savannah Primitive Baptist Church and was a member of Grace Primitive Baptist Church in Thomaston. Mrs. Benford graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in 1942. Mrs. Benford was preceded in death by her husband, Senior Master Sargent Howard G. Benford and her sisters, Grace (Tommy) Holliman and Annabelle (Charlie) York. Mr. Rashaun Latif CHATMAN aka "Bread", 21, of Shelby, N. C. died Tuesday, April 29, 2003 in Shelby N.C. Mr. Chatman was born March 7, 1982. He was formerly of Thomaston but lived in North Carolina. He spent many summers in Thomaston as a youth with his grandparents the late Lester Chatman and Lillie Mae Chatman of Thomaston. He was the youngest of five children. Trice Jr. Memorial Chapel at Trice Funeral Home with Pastor Lewis Parnell officiating, assisted by the Rev. Otis King Sr. and Presiding Elder H.E. Terrell. Burial followed in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Rev. Colbert died Thursday, May 1, 2003 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Trice Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. At an early age, Rev. Colbert joined the Bethel A.M.E. Church in Lakeland, Fla. His early education was received in the Polk County School System. He graduated form the Rochelle Senior High School and attended one year of school at Water College in Florida. Rev. Colbert later enlisted in the United States Marines. After serving his tenure he returned home and found work in cement products. In 1965 he moved to Atlanta and found employment with the Ford Motor Company where he worked for over 26 years. He retired from Ford Motor Company in 1991. In 1993 he moved to Upson County where he had relatives and retired. He received his call into the ministry in early 1956. He had served as pastor of several churches in Florida before moving to Atlanta. Mrs. Roan was born in Faulkville, Ala. on March 3, 1917 to the late Asa Brindley Murphree and the late Nannie Mae Baine Murphree. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John D. Roan Sr. who passed away in 1993 and her son-in- law, Jon Goldman, who passed away in 1998. Mrs. Roan was a member of the Concord Baptist Church, the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and the Retired Teachers Association. She taught English at Concord High School from 1941 to 1959, from 1959 to 1979 she taught reading and speech at Naples High School in Naples, Fla. After her retirement in 1979 she resumed her teaching career in Naples, Fla. from 1980 to 1990 teaching English as a second language at Napels High School, before returning to Concord, Ga. Rosenberg & Sons. Mr. Underwood was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, former member of the choir and church quartet. As a Sunday School teacher, he taught Junior Boys, Young Men and Adult Men. Mr. Underwood was also a member of the Thomaston Lions Club. For many years, he was the telephone voice of Santa Claus to many children of Thomaston and Upson County. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bess D. She was employed for many years at Belk Department Store where she worked as a sales associate. Mrs. Holmes was preceded in death by her husband, Mr. James Douglas Holmes of Thomaston. Funeral services for Mr. William H. "Buddy" McDANIEL, 80, of East County Road, were held Monday, May 26, 2003 at 12 noon in the Chapel of Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home with Rev. Joey Smith officiating. Burial followed in Upson Memorial Gardens. Mr. McDaniel died Saturday, May 24, 2003 at Southern Regional Medical Center, Riverdale. HE WAS AN ARMY VETERAN OF WORLD WAR II, SERVING IN THE PHILLIPINES AND PACIFIC THEATER OF WAR. Mr. McDaniel retired from the Road Sign Maintenance Shop of the Georgia DOT. He had been a member of East Thomaston Baptist Church for over 40 years. He was married to the late Mrs. Lucile Gassett McDaniel, who died on May 8th of this year. Survivors include his son, Mr. Dennis (Charlene) McDaniel of Jonesboro; sisters, Mrs. Mable Ellis and Mrs. Elizabeth Drew both of Dublin and Mrs. Ann Stapleton of Huntsville, Ala.; brothers, Mr. Grayson McDaniel and Mr. Felton McDaniel both of Dublin; granddaughters, Mrs. Heather White of Locust Grove and Miss Charity McDaniel of Jonesboro; great-granddaughter, Allie White; and several nieces and nephews. Memorial services for Mrs. Martha Bateman Benns REEVES, 92, of Thomaston were held Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. John Alexander and Dr. Robert W. Brown officiating. Mrs. Reeves died Sunday, May 25, 2003 after a period of declining health. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Reeves was born in Butler, Ga. on April 25, 1911. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Edward Benns. mr. Benns was the Editor of the Butler Hearld and a member of the Georgia Journalism Hall of Fame. Mrs. Reeves attended Wesleyan College, Macon, Ga and was a graduate of GSCW in Milledgeville. She was the widow of J. Farley Reeves of Thomaston, Ga. the town in which she spent most of her life and where she taught school for 42 years. Mrs. Reeves was a member of First United Methodist Church of Thomaston, the DAR and for the last seven years, the retirement community of Wesley Woods, where she enjoyed her family, friends and bridge. Survivors include her son, Joel Farley (Jack) Reeves Jr. and daughter-in-law, Jean, of Atlanta; a daughter, Virginia Reeves Massing, of Rome; a sister-in-law, Mrs. James Bazemore of Butler; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. ROGERS, 38, of Thomaston were held Tuesday, May 27, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Clark Funeral Home Chapel in Hawkinsville with Dr. Don McClung and Dr. Kelly Pritchett officiating. Burial followed in Orange Hill Cemetery. Mr. Rogers died Friday, May 23, 2003, in McDonough. Clark Funeral Home in Hawkinsville, Ga. was in charge of the arrangements. Mr. Rogers was a native of Pulaski County and a member of the Hawkinsville, Ga. First Baptist Church. He was a commercial truck driver. he was a former E.M.T. and was a radiologic Technologist. He graduated from Hawkinsville High School in 1983. Survivors include his. wife, Tanya Collins Rogers of Thomaston; his mother, Patricia Rogers of Hawkinsville and a sister Pamela Rogers Young of Hawkinsville; nieces, Anna young, Ashleigh Young and Amanda Young all of Hawkinsville; and a family pet, Prancer.
