Dan Todd officiating. Burial followed in the Neal Baptist Church Cemetery. Mr. Nixon died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002 at his residence. Coggins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Nixon was born in Randolph County, Ala. but lived most of his life in Georgia. He was retired from Carling Brewery with 16 years of service. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Louise Peaden Nixon; his wife, Mrs. Merita C. Nixon of Concord; his daughters, Mrs. Machandra Story of Zebulon, Mrs. Marsha "Lorraine" Lassiter of Milner, Mrs. Fairy Louise Callahan of Senoia and Mrs. Terry Cochran of Culloden; brothers, Mr. W.C. "Sam" Nixon of Concord, Mr. Roy L. Nixon and Mr. Wyatt L. Funeral services for Mr. Milwood Thomas SIMMONS, 71, of N Street, were held Sunday, Sept. 1, 2002 at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Coggins Funeral Home with the Rev. Joey Smith officiating. Burial followed in Upson Memorial Gardens. Mr. Simmons died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002 at his residence. Coggins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Simmons was born in Marion County, Ga. He worked for William Carter Company for 18 years and retired from B.F. Goodrich after 20 years of employment. He was a member of the American Legion and was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Navy. Survivors include his wife, Josie Simmons of Thomaston; daughter, Mrs. Sandra S. Adams of Thomaston; daughter and son-in-law, Mrs. Sharon S. (Reggie) Mathis of Thomaston; a brother, Mr. Harvey Simmons of Thomaston; and four grandchildren. Funeral services for Mr. Tony O'Neal MULLINS, 32, of Thomaston, were held Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2002 at 2 p.m. at the Mary Lizzie Baptist Church with the Rev. W. Gradick officiating. Burial followed in the Bethel Cemetery in Talbot County. Mr. Mullins died Thursday, Aug. 29, 2002 at his residence. Bentley & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. The family can be contacted at 1443 Triune Mill Road. Graveside services for Mr. Wilbur MITCHELL, 96, of Cochran, were held Monday, Sept. 2, 2002 at 3 p.m. in Mt. Calvary Baptist Cemetery with the Rev. Lanier Beasley and the Rev. Alan Mitchell officiating. Mr. Mitchell died Saturday, Aug. 31, 2002 at Pineview Health Care Center. Fisher Funeral Home of Cochran was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Mitchell was born in Fayette County. He was the son of the late Lon and Lue McElwaney Mitchell. He was married to the late Annie Marie Chapman Mitchell for 70 years. Mr. Mitchell moved to Manchester, Ga. in 1925 and worked for Callaway Textile Mills until 1960. He and his family moved to Molena, Ga. in 1970 where they lived for 26 years until moving to Macon in 1996. In 1997, they moved to Cary. He was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church in Cary. Mrs. Mitchell was an avid bird hunter and bird dog trainer, having raised and trained many prize winning bird dogs. Survivors include a son, Rev. Alan Mitchell of Cary; a daughter-in-law, Carolyn C. Mitchell of Cary; a granddaughter, Teri (Johnny) McClendon of Macon; a great- grandson, Jacob Mitchell McClendon of Macon; a sister, Vainnie Lue Mitchell Norton of Atlanta; and a niece, Nell Bolt of McDonough. Mr. Fortner was born in Pike County, Ga. but lived most of his life in Upson County. He was employed with B.F. Goodrich for 25 years and was also the owner/operator of the Hall Dodge Dealership. Mr. Fortner was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church where he served as music director and pianist. Survivors include his wife, Patsy Gordy Fortner of Thomaston; sons, Mr. Donald B. Fortner Jr. of Dunwoody and Mr. Gary F. Mrs. O'Neal was born in Upson County and moved to Spalding County in her adulthood. Mrs. Melinda Blake LANGHAM, 59, of Marietta, formerly of Thomaston, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002 at Northside Hospital in Atlanta. Mrs. Barrett was born in Walton County, Ga. but lived most of her life in Thomaston. She was retired from B.F. Goodrich where she worked as a respooler. Survivors include her daughters, Mrs. Kate Brown of Thomaston and Mrs. Evelyn Helms of Kathleen; a son-in- law, Mrs. Jerry Furvis of Thomaston; a sister, Mrs. Lillie Byrd of Conyers; 10 grandchildren; 17 great- grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home. Mr. Elige MARTIN SR., 83, of Woodbury, died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002 at his residence. Memorial services for Mr. Eugene W. STOUGH, 75, of 6653 Crest Highway in Molena, were held Monday, Sept. 2, 2002 at 11 a.m. at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Claude Turner officiating. Internment followed in Upson Memorial Gardens. Mr. Stough died Friday, Aug. 30, 2002 at his residence. Coggins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Stough was born in Toledo, Ohio on June 29, 1927 to the late Wallace and Lillian Weber Stough. After serving two years in the Navy, he enlisted in the Army where he retired with the rank of Sergeant Major in 1970 after 23 years of service. Ten years of his service was with the Military Police before going on to the Armed Forces Radio and Television Network at the Pentagon and also Korea, Alaska and New York. In 1988 he moved to Thomaston with this late wife Bonilyn Norris Stough, after retiring from Norfolk Southern Railway. Mr. Stough worked at Thomaston Country Club as Pro Shop Manager before it was sold, then remained at Raintree Golf Club until he retired in 2001. Never one to be inactive, Gene then went to watchmaker school and was repairing watches at Reems Jewelers at the time of his death. An active Mason, Gene was a Past Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge #64 in Cohutta, Ga. before becoming a member of Morning Star Lodge #27 in Thomaston. He was also a member of the Khirah Shrine club and the Oriental Shrine Band. Survivors include his wife, Valarie Kennedy Stough of Molena; daughters, Gail S. (Chris) Young of Simpsonville, S.C. and Cheryl S. Hindenburg of Atoka, Okla.; a step-son, Chad R. Kennedy of Molena; a step- daughter, Aimee K. (Shannon) Anthony of LaGrange; granddaughters, Cathy H. (Chuck) Steward of Ellenwood, Debra H. Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2002 Internment services for Mrs. Mary Sloan PORTER, 88, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., will be held Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002 at 5 p.m. in Glenwood Cemetery. Mrs. Porter died Aug. 26, 2002. Mrs. Porter was a member of the Coronado United Methodist Church, the new Smyrna Beach Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She was preceded in death by her brother, Buddy Sloan of Thomaston. Survivors include her husband, George Weaver Porter of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; a son, Kenneth Porter of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; and Dr. Sam and Carolee Porter McKinstry of Johnson City, Tenn. Mr. John D. MURPHY, 86, of Highway 80 in the Salem Community of Upson County, died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002 at the Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon. Survivors include two sons, Mr. Jack Murphy of the Salem Community and Mr. Albert (Earnestine) Murphy of New York, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; a daughter-in- law, Ms. Mattie Murphy of Thomaston and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that will miss him dearly. Mr. Piper was with the Lamar County Sheriff's Department for a number of years and was currently with the Barnesville Police Department. He was also Deputy Coroner of Lamar County. Mr. Piper was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Marines. Burial will be held Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 at 2 p.m. in Southview Cemetery in Thomaston. Ms. Adkisson died Monday, Sept. 9, 2002 in Avante in Charlotte, N.C. McEwen Funeral and Cremation Service, Pineville Chapel of North Carolina is in charge of arrangements. Ms. Adkisson was born Feb. 12, 1935 in Thomaston, Ga., the daughter of the late Cromer E. and Lila I. Pearman Thrasher. She was a graduate of R. E. Lee Institute and attended Georgia State College for women. Dot worked at Washburn Graphics in Charlotte and retired form Belk Store Services. She participated in a variety of sports and and was an avid sports fan. She was a member of Cokesbury United Methodist Church and the Senior Group Circle. Ms. Adkisson was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Bobby Thrasher. Survivors include her son, Andrew Adkisson and his wife, Sheri of Asheville, N.C.; four sisters, Sybil Parrish and Mary Holbrook, both of Charlotte, N.C., Martha Salmond of Marietta and Jo Evelyn Stephens of Macon. Funeral services for Mrs. Louise Traylor SCOTT, 89, of Thomaston, were held Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2002 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home with the Rev. Drew Stephens and the Rev. Dwain Penn officiating. Burial followed in the Shiloh Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Scott died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Scott was born in Upson County on Oct. 5, 1912. She was the daughter of the late Willie Wilson Traylor and Jennie Pearl Austin Traylor. She was the widow of Frank Hill Scott, who preceded her in death in 1971. Frank was a watchmaker and well-loved and respected by citizens throughout the Thomastotrade area. Mrs. Scott was a graduate of Roberta High School and received a BS degree in elementary education from Tift collge, now Mercer University. She lived her entire life on North Delray Road in Upson County. Mrs. Scott was an elementary teacher and began her teaching career in Upson county in 1934. She taught for 44 years until her retirement in 1978. She loved to dop in McDonalds for a hamburger and have some of her former students drop by for a short visit. Many citizens throughout the county will remember Mrs. Scott as the lady who drove the 1955 blue Tudor Ford up and down U.S. Highway 19. She was an avid birdwatcher and continued this hobby throughout her years in the nursing home. Mrs. Scott was a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church for 75 years. One of her last acts for the church was to make a contribution to the newly formed church library. She loved and treasured books and wanted others to have an opportunity to read good literature. She began teaching Sunday School in 1929 and continued until she stopped for health reasons in 1994. She was very active in her church attendance and with her work in the Woman's Missionary Union (WMU). She was active in her professional career belonging to the Upson County Teachers Association, The Georgia Education Association and the National Education Association. Survivors include a step-daughter, Yvonne Scott (Robert L.) Quinn of Zebulon; three step-grandsons, Robert L. Quinn, Kelly Quinn and Scott Quinn; four step-great-granchildren and one step-great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Mrs. Janie T. Roberts of Columbus and Mrs. Pearl T. Raines of Fort Valley; two brothers-in-law, Mr. John C. Roberts of Columbus and Mr. Warner J. Raines of Fort Valley; two nieces, Mrs. Barbara T. (Hugh) Dunn of Greenville and Mrs. Vanita T. (Billy) Maxwell of Climax; three nephews, Dr. John A. (Gail) Traylor of Novato, California, Dr. James L. Traylor of Thomaston and Mr. David L. Mrs. Corley was a native of Upson County and a former resident of Yatesville. She was retired from the Thomaston Mills Bleachery. As a member of the Henry Grady Homemakers Club, Mrs. Corley was recognized as Upson County Woman of the Year by the Atlanta Journal Constitution and was also interviewed about her skills as a homemaker. Mrs. Corley was also a member of the Yatesville Baptist Church since 1937 where she was active in the WMU. Survivors include her sons, Mr. Robert L. Corley and Mr. Harold B. Corley, both of Thomaston; granddaughters, Mrs. Ann Pasley of Thomaston and Mrs. Lori Passmore of Yatesville; grandsons, Rev. Mrs. Isabell PARKS, 73, of Alvaton, died Friday, Sept. 13, 2002 in Riverdale, Ga. Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date by Bentley & Sons Funeral Home. Survivors include five daughters; five sons; four sisters; one brother; 33 grandchildren; 61 great- grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends who will miss her. Funeral services for Mr. Irvin Benjamin LITTLETON, 57, of Griffin, will be held Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the chapel of the Conner-Westbury Funeral Home with the Rev. Dave Torbert officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Barnesville. Mr. Littleton died Sunday, Sept. 15, 2002 at Spalding Regional Hospital. Conner-Westbury Funeral Home of Griffin is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Littleton was born Nov. 22, 1944 in Upson County. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Clarence Littleton, his mother, Alma Beatrice Lane Littleton Bussey, an infant son, Timothy Lynn and brothers, Raymond, Lee and Larry Littleton. Mr. Littleton retired from W. W. Williams Detroit Diesel Company of Atlanta. He helped construct New Life Baptist Church, formerly Bible Baptist Tabernacle of Barnesville and the Grace Baptist Church in Zebulon where his membership was currently held. Survivors include his wife, Dana Turner Littleton; a son, Joseph Littleton of Griffin; step-sons, Ed Peters of Griffin and Randy Peters of Marietta; grandsons, Adam and Aaron Peters of Calhoun; a daughter-in-law, Susan Reese of Calhoun; brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Lisa Littleton of Opelika, Ala.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Runelle and Fred Langford Sr. of Barnesville, Marie and Eugene Helms of Thomaston and Betty and Ferdinand Lindauer of Louisville, Ky.; brother-in-law and sister- in-law, Donnie and Rachel Turner; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Peggy and Bill Leverett and numerous nieces and nephews.
