David Dawson officiating. Mr. Alvarez died Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2003 at Upson Regional Medical Center. Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Alvarez, a native of San Francisco, Calif., had lived in Thomaston for 13 years. HE SERVED IN THE U.S. AIR FORCE and was a retired security guard. Mr. Alvarez was uncle, great-uncle and great-great uncle to families across the U.S.A. Survivors include his sisters, Gloria A. Walker of Thomaston, Carmen Serafino of Oakdale, Calif., Connie Stephens of Hayward, Calif., Mary Simbra of Freemont, Calif., Julie Stephens of Sacramento, Calif., Pat Diehl of San Diego, Calif. and Rose Moyer of West Palm Beach, Fla.; a brother, Joe Alvarez of Sacramento, Calif.; and nephews, Jimmy Walker of Thomaston and Thomas Walker of Dallas, Texas. BENTLEY Mr. Marvin Bentley, 76, of Indianapolis, Ind., brother of the late Nellie Maude Bentley Atwater of Thomaston and uncle of Gary L. Atwater of Thomaston, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at Antioch Baptist Church in Indianapolis. Burial will follow at Floral Park in Indianapolis. Grundy Memorial Chapel of Indianapolis is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Bentley was born Nov. 7, 1926. He was raised in the Culloden Community. He was a former member of the Orange Grove Baptist Church in Culloden. MR. BENTLEY WAS A VETERAN OF WORLD WAR II. He retired from the General Motors Automobile Factory after nearly 40 years of service. BROWN Funeral services for Miss Lauren Kathleen Brown, 25, of Chapel Hill, were held Monday, Aug. 25, 2003 at 4 p.m. at Clemmons First Baptist Church with Dr. Bobby Phillips officiating. Miss Brown was born Sept. 22, 1977 in Athens, Ga. to Ray R. and Diane Hamby Brown. Lauren was a dedicated and compassionate Christian who committed her life to helping others. She was a member of Clemmons First Baptist Church. She was a 1996 honor graduate of Forsyth County Day School and a 1999 graduate of The Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in applied biology with high honors. She currently was a third year student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine pursuing a career in pediatrics. Her volunteer mission work included Sojourners in Houston, Texas, World Changers and St. Joseph's Hospital's Mercy Mobile Care, serving Atlanta's homeless. She served 14 years as a volunteer with the annual Thanksgiving Meals in the Lincoln Park community, was a member of the Springfield Baptist Church where she served on the Mother Board, was a member of the choir and was serving as "Mother of the Church" and served on the Kitchen Committee. Mr. Calhoun was born in LaPlata, Colo., but lived in the Griffin, Ga. area for many years. He served his country as a sergeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Mr. Calhoun was retired from APAC Construction where he worked for over 32 years as a foreman. He was a member of Rehoboth Church of the Nazarene where he also served as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School Superintendent and was a member of the church board. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Barbara Jean Calhoun of Griffin; a son, Mr. James (Melinda) C. Calhoun Jr. of Griffin; daughters, Mrs. Susan (Todd) Mauney of Blacksburg, S.C., Mrs. Linda (Lyn) Smith of Lifsey Springs and Mrs. Debra (Jim) Thomas of Griffin; a brother, Mr. Curtis (Roberta) Calhoun of Acworth; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. JORDAN, 26, formerly of Barnesville, will be held Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003 at 2 p.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church in Lamar County with Elder M.P. Taylor officiating. Mrs. Helms was a native of Atlanta and a resident of Upson County for most of her life. She was employed in the weave shop of Thomaston Mills and also worked as a beautician. Turner of Griffin; several nieces and nephews; and several great-nieces and great-nephews. Ms. Ashley Marie JONES, 20, of Grantling Street, died Friday, Sept. 26, 2003 at her residence. Young of Thomaston; daughters, Ms. Vivian Bridges, Mrs. Ruby (Bentley) Strom and Mrs. Barbara (Billy) Swatzell, all of Thomaston; brothers, Mr. Ellis Young of Jackson, Mr. Franklin Young of Newnan, Mr. Goodroe Young of Barnesville, Mr. John R. Young of Thomaston and Mr. Robert Young of Fayetteville; sisters, Mrs. Shirley Perry and Mrs. Louise Secrist, both of Thomaston; Mrs. Jean Smith of Griffin and Mrs. Virginia Stevens of Griffin; and five grandchildren.
