These are photographs of Adalade "Addie" Smith Howell of Upson County, Georgia.
 
Adalade "Addie" Smith Howell was born on July 20, 1865 in Talbot County,
Georgia, the daughter of Anthony Garnett Smith, Jr. (1809-1891) and Elizabeth
Murphy/Murphey Smith Smith (1823-1902).  She married Joshua Calhoun Howell on
December 24, 1890 in Upson County, GA.  Adalade Smith Howell died April 20, 1951
in Waco, TX and was buried at Bell Springs Cemetery in Hill County, TX.
 
Joshua and Addie Howell came by train to Texas soon after they were married. 
They purchased a cotton farm in Hill County, and he served as the schoolmaster
of the Gholson schools for a time.  During her life in Texas, Addie Howell would
always have her daily cups of coffee in a cup and saucer which had been a part
of her parents' wedding china.  The cup was in the possession of one of her
granddaughters, Hester Beck Willis, for many years.  Addie Howell was well known
for her beautiful handwork and many of her quilts which she made are presently
being used by her descendants. Joshua and Addie Howell joined the Methodist
Church in West, McLennan County, Texas on April 17, 1892, and they traveled back
to Upson County, GA to visit their families around Christmas in 1895.  After
Joshua Howell's death in 1901, she bought a beautiful old home in West, TX.
