We would go to the dump where the Martha Mills hauled all the waste from the mill and get the wheels from the old bobbin carts. We would use the wheels and scrap wood to build a cart to roll down the many hills in the mill village. Sometimes we were lucky and found a wooden box that could be converted easily to a race car, and race we would down the hills. It is a wonder that we were not all killed. There was one boy who did get killed when he ran into a car. I am attaching a photo of a Soap Box Race in 1947. The photo came from the Silvertown Cord, a publication published by the Martha Mills. Does anyone else remember these cars? Are there any other pictures??
