Assassinated January 24, 1903. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Barker, a prominent family in Upson County in the 1800s. They were the founders of Barker Springs, which became Perks, which became Crystal Springs. Joseph Eugene was murdered by Drew Smith. It was quite a sensational episode for Upson County, with the governor offering a reward for the capture of Mr. Smith. He (Smith) turned himself in about a week later and was tried and convicted. He was sentenced to life in prison.
