Rhodes Madison E. Rhodes was born 1813 in North Carolina. His parents and place of birth have not been identified by the writer. James Alfred Sartain in his "History of Walker County, Georgia" listed Madison Rhodes as an "early settler" of Walker County. Sartain noted early settlers as those arriving between 1833 (when Walker County was organized) and 1850. Sartain wrote that Madison Rhodes "grew to manhood" within one and a half miles west of LaFayette. Madison E. Rhodes appears on the 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 census reports of Walker County. He married Miriam Johnson. (There are some who believe Miriam's maiden name was Caldwell). Madison & Miriam had 9 children (Drusilla, Georgiana, Richard, Jerome, Talula, Carrie, Marvin, Carma, and Hosford). Madison Rhodes reported his occupation as carpenter on the 1870 census. In the 1880 census, he is shown as a farmer. He served as Tax Collector for Walker County 1860-62, and represented Walker County in the state legislature 1865-66. He introduced a bill which became law and changed the southern boundary of Walker County. He was paid $630 for 70 days of service in that session of the General Assembly. Rhodes was Justice of the Inferior Court, Walker County, 1866-68, Madison E. Rhodes was a charter member of Masonic Western Lodge #91 and held several offices in that organization. Madison E. Rhodes died 1891 and is buried in Ringgold, Catoosa County, Georgia. Submitted by Donna Warlick, ggg-granddaughter of Madison E. Rhodes
