We first camped at Big Shanty, Georgia on the W. R. A.
Road. Our first service was in East Tennessee in the
spring and early summer of 1862. In the latter part of
the summer and fall of 1862, we made the Kentucky
campaign under General E. Kirby Smith. We then crossed
the Cumberland Mountains at the Cumberland Gap back into
East Tennessee. From there we were ordered to middle
Tennessee and to Murfreesboro. From there our Division
was ordered, about the 20th of December 1862, to
Vicksburg, Mississippi. Made the Mississippi campaign,
fought through the battle of Baker's Creek, Mississippi
on May 16, 1863; fell back into Vicksburg the next day;
went through a forty-eight days' siege, and surrendered
on the 4th day of July 1863, and were paroled. There was
more or less fighting every day during the siege. We were
exchanged about September 1863. Our Division was ordered
to Sweetwater and Loudon in East Tennessee. Remained
until General Longstreet left Bragg's army at Missionary
Ridge and relieved us. We then returned to Missionary
Ridge and Lookout Mountain. Camped on Lookout Mountain
until November 23rd, then we were ordered off the
mountain and to Missionary Ridge. We took our position on
the extreme right of line and on the 25th of November we
fought the battle of Missionary Ridge. We lost the Ridge
and fell back to Dalton, Georgia, where we took up winter
quarters and remained there until about the 7th or 8th of
May 1864. Sherman appeared in our front and flanked us
out of our position. We fell back to Resaca, fought the
battle of Resaca, Georgia the 14th and 15th of May. We
had more or less fighting to do every day during that
campaign from Dalton to Atlanta and Jonesboro, and from
May 7th or 8th until September 1st. Among the battles
fought during the campaign were Resaca, New Hope Church,
Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Atlanta and
Jonesboro. There were many skirmishes, and picket
fighting besides battles mentioned above.

Sparger, Robert -- Private - March 4, 1862. Deserted
September 1, 1863. Captured near Chickamauga, Georgia
September 18, 1863. Released at Camp Douglas, Illinois,
May 16, 1865.

Sparger, Thomas -- Private - March 4, 1862. Captured at
Vicksburg, Mississippi July 4, 1863. Paroled at Camp
Morton, Indiana, and sent via Baltimore, Maryland for
exchange February 26, 1865. No later record.

Strange, J. D. -- Private - March 4, 1862. Captured at
Vicksburg, Mississippi July 4, 1863, and paroled there
July 8, 1863.  Appointed 1st Corporal August 1863. Roll
for April 30, 1864, last on file, shows him present. No
later record. Pension records show he "Was left in
hospital at Florence, South Carolina, February 1865."

Styles, David Hoke -- Private - March 4, 1862. Wounded in
left foot, resulting in loss of toe, at Tazewell,
Tennessee August 6, 1862. Captured in Kentucky in 1862.
Exchanged at Cincinnati, Ohio, September 4, 1862. (Shown
also as exchanged at Tazewell, Tennessee and Cumberland
Gap, Tennessee September 5, 1862.) No later record. (Born
in 1838.)

Tanner, W. F. -- Private - March 4, 1862. Captured at
Vicksburg, Mississippi July 4, 1863; refused to be
paroled and asked to take oath of allegiance to U. S.
Government and be released. Took oath of allegiance to U.
S. Government at Camp Morton, Indiana, and released
January 3, 1865. 

Thurman, S. H. -- Private - March 4, 1862. Captured at
Vicksburg, Mississippi July 4, 1863, and paroled there
July 8, 1863.  Deserted September 1, 1863.

Wallin, J. M. (or Walling) -- Private - March 4, 1862.
Died prior to January 13, 1863.

Wallin, James (#1) (or Walling) -- Private - March 4,
1862. Deserted September 1, 1863. Captured at
Chattanooga, Tennessee September 19, 1863. Took oath of
allegiance to U. S. Government at Nashville, Tennessee,
and released date not given.

Wallin, James (#2 (or Walling) -- Private - March 4,
1862. Died June 25, 1862.

Wallin, Jesse (or Walling) -- Private - May 15, 1862.
Captured in 1863. Exchanged at Fort Delaware, Delaware
July 4, 1863.  Deserted while on furlough September 8,
1863.

Wallin, Joseph (or Walling) -- Private - March 4, 1862.
Captured at Resaca, Georgia May 16, 1864. Took oath of
allegiance to U. S. Government, and transferred to U. S.
Navy from Military Prison at Alton, Illinois, June 10,
1864.

Wallin, Munroe (or Walling) -- Private - March 4, 1862.
Died in Newsome Hospital at Chattanooga, Tennessee May 3,
1862.

Wallin, William (or Walling) -- Private - March 4, 1862.
Deserted September 1, 1863. Took oath of allegiance to U.
S. Government at Chattanooga, Tennessee and released
February 16, 1864.

Ware, Martin (or Wier) -- Private - March 4, 1862.
Appointed Corporal. Captured at Baker's Creek,
Mississippi May 16, 1863. Exchanged at Fort Delaware,
Delaware July 4, 1863. Deserted September 1, 1863.

Weathers, A. -- Private - March 4, 1862. "Neither present
nor accounted for."

White, D. C. -- 4th Sergeant - March 4, 1862. Killed at
Vicksburg, Mississippi May 28, 1863.

Williams, S. -- Private - March 4, 1862. Deserted
September 1, 1863. Admitted within lines, Department of
Cumberland, in 1863. Sent from Nashville, Tennessee to
Louisville, Kentucky December 11, 1863, where he took
oath of allegiance to U. S. Government, and was released
to remain north of Ohio River during war, December 16,
1863.
