WR Stannard Covington Ga Very respectfully, J. MINOT, Commissioner STATE OF Georgia } COUNTY OF Newton } On this 27th day of June A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty six personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid, John Armistead who, being duly sworn according to law, declares that he has not applied for or received bounty land under this or any previous act of Congress, other that the application referred to as the application under which he received a warrant, issued under the act of 28th September 1850 for eighty eight acres according to deponent present recollection - and that the reason he makes his mark to this application is because he is unable to write his name in consequence of nervousness and old age sworn to and subscribed before me his John X Armistead Mark James Cook J.P. Transcribed by John Davis (davisje@erols.com) 25 April 2002, NOTE OF TRANSCRIBER: John Armistead died November 15, 1856. It is unclear from the pension file at the National Archives whether he ever received a bounty land warrant for his second application (No. 118,521) before his death. John Armistead was born in Virginia, March 14, 1774. He appears first in Oglethorpe County Georgia about 1798. His first wife was Keziah Anderson, daughter of Nathaniel and Susannah Anderson of Oglethorpe County, GA. We do not know where she was born, or where they were married. He had nine children by her before she died circa 1816/1817. He then married Mrs. Amy Powell OWEN, widow of Capt. William Owen, on March 29, 1818 in Oglethorpe Co., GA. They are found in Walton Co., GA in the 1830 - 1850 censuses. John and Amy had five children. Amy died Nov. 26, 1850. At some point John moved to Newton Co. (probably to live with his son James) where he applied for the bounty land in 1855. I believe that is where he died and is buried. ======================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be freely used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
