Bentley died suddenly at Loganville Home. Verney Elmer Bentley, Sr., 69, of Loganville, one of Walton County’s best know and most highly respected citizen, passed away at his home in Loganville early Monday morning from a sudden heart attack. He awoke for the day in an unusually cheerful frame of mind, according to members of the family, and passed away suddenly while putting on his clothes. Funeral services were schedule to occur Wednesday afternoon from Bay Creek Baptist Church with Rev. E. N. Anthony officiating. Interment was set for Bay Creek Cemetery with the E. L. Almond Co. in charge of funeral arrangements. Mr. Bentley was a prominent Walton County figure for many years. He was a retired farmer, and was also well know in civic and political circles. For 30 years he served as Justice of Peace from Buncombe District and was of the Walton County Democratic Executive Committee and was the local Registrar of Vital Statistic. Perhaps best known of Mr. Bentley activities was his tireless efforts in promoting the session to the 12 County Signing Convention, of which is a past president. Mr. Bentley had countless friends and never knew a man whom he called stranger. His pleasant, friendly manner and his soft spoken address won him wide respect and admiration in many contacts of his personal and public live. He was a native resident of Walton County and lived in Loganville for the past 10 years. In his own community and throughout this section he will be genuinely missed. In addition to his wife, Mrs. Ludie Brooks Bentley, he is survived by 8 children as follows; Mrs. Trummie B. Green of Atlanta, Mrs. Vassie B. Anthony of Atlanta, Mrs. Frances Singleton of Houston, Texas, Mrs. Nina Barton of Smyrna, Mrs. Julia Bright of L.A. California, Mrs. Alice Palmer of Charleston, S.C., Hurts Bentley of Atlanta, Verney Bentley, Jr. of Atlanta. He is survived by eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
