In Memoriam

Departed this life, April 6, 1890, Joseph M. Pickrell, aged about 12 years was 
taking a boat ride on Appalachee River just above the bridge at Mr. J. J. 
Bell’s mill with 4 or 5 other boys.  A leak suddenly springing in the boat, the 
boys become frightened and at once began to leap into the river, all making 
their escape except our young brother, Joe—and I am called upon to write a 
short obituary upon his death.  The writer has been acquainted with this young 
brother not quite two years, but is glad to say that he was one of those quiet 
good boys who never failed to gain the confidence and esteem of all who knew 
him.  Joe had a manly and matured appearance.  It was my pleasure to receive 
him into the church about 12 months ago.  He was devoted to the church, a 
consistent and faithful member, always at his post.  Just a few hours before 
his death, he gathered around the sacramental table for the last time on earth 
with such gentleness that it was noticed by many.  Jodie possessed special 
gifts in music and could he have lived he doubtless would have been a useful 
member of the church; but while it is sad, we would not complain, for Jodie has 
gone to rest with the angels above.  And to the parents, brothers, and sisters, 
one and all, let us be faithful and meet Jodie in heaven.  Goodbye dear Brother 
Joe, until we meet again.  J.A.M.

Buried at Mt. Carmel Church Cemetery in Walton Co., GA.  Joe M. Pickrell, son 
of A. J. & L. F. Pickrell  b. 18 November 1877 and d. 6 April 1890.
