William’s father Tobias’s parents, Jacob and Catherine Lether Miller were immigrants from Palatine, Germany to New Bern, North Carolina. His maternal grandfather, James Wood, was the founder of Winchester, Virginia. As the American Revolution came about, William, along with a great many young men, heeded the call to serve. He served in the 10th North Carolina Regiment under Col. Abraham Shepherd, Capt. Medaris’s Company, enlisting on 20 December 1778 and serving three years. After the term of service he moved southward to Georgia, where he served in the Georgia Militia. In 1832 he was granted a Revolutionary Pension and drew it until his death. Also as a Revolutionary Soldier, he was granted 287 1/2 acres of bounty land in Washington County, and drew land in Georgia’s 1827 Cherokee Land Lottery. After the War ended, he returned to North Carolina, where he married Quaker- bred Amy Barker, also of the area of Craven County later to become Jones County, in 1784. They had nine children. After the marriage, William moved the family back to Georgia. Their first residence here was in Screven County, where he was commissioned Captain of the Militia on 19 June 1798. About 1800 he moved to Bulloch County, then a few years later moved again to Montgomery County, where he became Justice of the Peace of the 393rd Militia District, from 1817-1818. After briefly living in Tattnall County in the 1820s, William relocated for a final time. He, with his wife and all of their children and their families (except Elsie, who removed to Wilkinson County and Susanah who remained in Bulloch only to move later to Lumpkin County) migrated to the newly opened Ware County, becoming some of that county’s pioneer settlers. The Millers settled in the Kettle Creek area near present-day Waycross. They were instrumental in the organization of the Kettle Creek Methodist Church, were devout members, and helped establish the Kettle Creek school. Sadly, Amy was the first to pass away, at the home of her son David J. Miller in 1831. William followed a few years later, in 1837. Both are buried in the Kettle Creek Church Cemetery.
