A. Lott block. The members of the firm are brothers= J. W. S., and C. S. Hardy. They are both natives of the Mosely Hall township, Lenoir County, N. C. Parents of these gentlemen were John L. and Nannie (nee Beeton.) Their father was a merchant in his early days and lost all he had in the war between the states. From Stantonsburg, Wilson County, N. C., he removed with his family to Lenoir county and was accidently killed there in 1877. Shortly after the mother died leaving the three boys who had not reached their majority to care for seven children besides themselves. Both of these, now successful progressive and honorable merchants, had to hustle for the family and in consequence had very little schooling, but their upright and courteous manner won them the love of all whom they came in contact with and in consequence today are in affluence and doing a business of about $75,000 a year. They conducted the farm until they came to Waycross, when J. W. S., connected himself for a time with the plant now known as Electric Light & Power Co., and C. S., drove an ice wagon. In 1893 they started a small grocery in that portion of Waycross known as "Old Waycross," with a cash capital of less than $100. Their present establishment, which has recently been remodeled and fitted up with the acommodiousness that their business demands, is located on Plant Avene, in the J. A. Lott block. J. W. S., is a K. P., and Noble Grand of the local lodge of Odd Fellows. C. S. is an Odd Fellow. Their father was a Mason and a Veteran. Both are members of the Methodist Church. J. W. S., owns the cottage where he resides on Folk street, and C. S. ownes his home at Sunnywide which contains about twenty acres of lands. On this property he raises choice cattle, horses and Berkshire registered Biltmore hogs. J. W. S. Hardy married Miss Hollon U. Scott, of La Grange, Lenois count, N. C., and Miss Rose and Alma are the children of that union. His first wife died in August. 1905, and in June, 1906, he married Mrs. Fannie E. McVeigh, who was a widow, and whose husband was clerk of the Superior Court here for a long time. C. S. Hardy married Miss Lida Kennedy, of La Grange, N. C. They have six children, Letha, Harold, Ruth, Glenn, C. B., Jr., and Lucy. These gentlemen are among the many of Waycross' representative business men and they have many friends here.
