STRICKLAND James Wenthworth Strickland, Clerk of the Waycross City Council, was born in Ware County, June 7, 1847. His parents were Allen C. and Cassie. His mother was the daughter of Capt. James A. Sweat. He was a farmer and was captain of Co. G., Fourth Georgia Cavalry and died from natural causes after being two years in the service. Mr. Strickland's grand parents were named James and Nellie. City Clerk Strickland attended the public schools and Blackshear Academy in Pierce County. Mr. Strickland enlisted in the Confederate service at the age of seventeen, entering as a private in Co. G., Fourth Georgia Cavalry, and served during the last year of the war, under Capt. Alexander McMillan. He was at Screven, Ga. at the close of the war with his company. He is a Mason, Knight Templar and Past Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias and an Odd Fellow, a member of the First Methodist Church and a member of the choir. This is his sixth year as Clerk of the City Council. He married Miss Annie E. Hendry, daughter of Capt. E. D. and Caroline Hendry. His only daughter's name is Miss Carrie E. Mr. Strickland has made an efficient Clerk, and he is a Christian gentleman who is beloved by all who know him.
