The certificate is #4504 for William Mercer who was born 1857 per death certificate, born 1859 per census, born 1860 per descendants; died May 28, 1932. Wanda Arnold, who has the death certificate, says the unmarked grave could be the site of William's grave. Wanda says research says he was buried in Hargraves Cemetery without an undertaker. I found no name of William Mercer in the cemetery. NOTE: Possible burial. Wanda Arnold also states that William Mercer's wife was Charity Herrin. I found no marked grave with her name. Her bones remain in Griffis Cemetery. Grandson Rouel Murry wanted the markers moved because loggers were breaking up graves in Griffis Cemetery. Laura was born 2/13/1869 and died 1/29/1903. Her headstone reads: “The Lord gave and The Lord Hath taken away Blessed be the name of the Lord.” Hargraves, Thomas Hopewell 1837 – 3/22/1874 Hargraves, Elizabeth Brantley 1841 – 1879 (she died 1879, not 1874) (Note: Research indicates her name was Harriet Elizabeth Brantley Hargraves and that she was still living in 1877, possibly receiving a pension into 1879.) Built up grave, cement broken, marker broken and gone (1st wife of W. B.?) (Note: Research indicates this could be the grave of Elizabeth Walden Hargraves, 5/10/1841 - 11/25/1875, 1st wife of W. B. According to Nadine LLoyd Eschelman, William was buried between both wives and the epitaph on Elizabeth's gravestone read: "In Sacred Memory of Elizabeth Hargraves. She was a fond mother and a friend to all. So fades the lovely blooming flower trail, smiling solace of an hour, so soon our transient comforter and pleasure only blooming to die." If there were graves in the section, I did not find them at the times I visited to do this survey over the space of almost two years. * * * * * I have designated sections so that I could work more easily, but discovered that the cemetery is not laid out in rows that are evenly spaced. If I have made mistakes in names and dates, or failed to record some of the graves of your loved ones, please forgive me. I will appreciate any corrections you send to me. All the wooden crosses marking graves in earlier times have rotted and the names and dates of those who were buried there are lost. My Mother, Lissie Johns Hargraves, 92 years of age, accompanied me on most of the visits to Hargraves Cemetery.
