Ware County Churches Memorial Baptist File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Barbara Winge barbarawinge@yahoo.com http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/ware.htm WAYCROSS JOURNAL-HERALD, Waycross, Georgia Monday April 22, 1974 MEMORIAL BAPTIST ORGANIZED IN 1958 Memorial Baptist Church was organized in October, 1958 and named Alice Street Chapel. Land was purchased at the corner of Riverside Drive and Alice Street and the church remains at this location today. On June 21, 1959, services were held constituting the mission as an independent missionary Baptist Church and naming it Memorial Baptist Church. During the service 74 were received as Charter members. The first pastor, as a mission and then as a church was the Rev. Clyde Jones. The five original deacons were Habric E. Brooks, chairman, Harry Moye, Art Schiefelbein, Joe Taylor and Jack Yawn. From the first year church budget of less than $10,000, the Church has grown to a membership of 448 and a 1973-74 church budget of $54,834. From the original temporary sanctuary, now serviing as a part of the educational building, the church has increased its educational facilities, pruchased additional adjoining property and in September, 1964, dedicated the present modern sanctuary. Facilities and services have increased over the years, the latest being the addition of the fully operative church _____ [torn]. Other pastors have included the Rev. Barrett Lamb, the Rev. Brooks Hampton, the Rev. Carl Ledbetter, and the Rev. Jack Belcher who became the pastor in January of 1973.
