SALISBURY IS CALLED BY DEATH DALEVAN SALISBURY, 412 Reed Street, retired chief watch inspector who served several southern railroads for many years, died shortly after noon Thursday at his residence, after an extended illness. Mr. SALISBURY was prominently known in Waycross and throughout the Southeast, particularly in railroad circles. Though modest and retiring in nature, he made a host of friends, and his death has brought sorrow to this entire section. He had retired several years ago after 40 years as chief watch inspector for the Youman's Jewelry Company, which handled inspections for the Atlantic Coast Line, the Florida East Coast, and other roads. He was born at Worcester, N. Y., but with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Salisbury, moved to Waycross as an 8 year old youth. The Salisbury family was one of the pioneer families of Waycross, moving here when there were only 500 inhabitants. Mr. SALISBURY was a charter member of the First Methodist Church, and played a prominent part in the construction of the church building. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Stella Walker Salisbury of Waycross, two daughters, Mrs. A. E. Smith of Waycross, and Mrs. Bannon Jones of Athens, three granddaughters, Mrs. Charles Woodward of Charlotte, N. C., and Sallie and Del Jones of Athens, also two great granddaughters, Ann and Lynn Woodward of Charlotte, N. C. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 6:30 o'clock at the First Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Albert S. Trulock, pastor, and the Rev. Jones Hitch, superintendent of the Waycross District, with burial at Oakland Cemetery. . L. Hinson and Company is in charge of arrangements. WAYCROSS JOURNAL-HERALD WAYCROSS, GEORGIA Saturday, April 22, 1944 DELEVAN SALISBURY Impressive rites were held Friday afternoon at 6:30 o'clock at the First Methodist Church, for DELAVAN SALISBURY, who died at his home Thursday afternoon at his home [sic] after a long illness. The service was conducted by the Rev. Albert S. Turlock, pastor of the First Methodist Church of which the deceased was one of the founders and the Rev. James W. Hitch, district superintendent of the Waycross district. Mr. SALISBURY had been a resident of Waycross since boyhood, being a native of Worcester, N. Y. He was chief watch inspector for the Youman's Jewelry Company for 40 years. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Stella Walker Salisbury of Waycross; two daughters, Mrs. A. E. Smith of Waycross and Mrs. Bannon Jones of Athens; three granddaughters, Mrs. Charles Woodward of Charlotte, N. C. and Sallie and Del Jones of Athens; also two great great granddaughters, Ann and Lynn Woodward of Charlotte, N. C. Pallbearers were F. B. Folsom, L. B. Harrell, Dr. C. A. Witmer, Dr. B. H. Minchew, George Crawley, Charles Darling, R. H. Husbands, J. E. Stewart, and R. L. Walker. The floral tributes were profuse and beautiful. Burial was at Oakland Cemetery. W. L.
