WARE COUNTY GA Newspaper Federal Building - Erin W. Johnson File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by Barbara Winge barbarawinge@yahoo.com http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/ware/newspapers/fedbldg.txt Waycross Journal Herald Waycross, Ware County, Georgia October 28, 1977 Federal Building Will Honor Erin W. Johnson Sen. Sam Nunn said in Waycross last night he has been informed that the Postmaster General has approved the naming of the new federal complex here in honor of the late Waycross City Manager Erin W. Johnson. Nunn said at the annual chamber of commerce meeting that he received word of the official approval of the action from his Waycross office before leaving Atlanta to come to Waycross Friday. The senator praised Johnson, who died last year, for his public service and said the designating of the office structure as the Erin W. Johnson Buildng will constitute a perpetual memorial to the late community leader. Waycross Mayor R. W. Tonning, Jr., members of the City Commission and others had urged that the federal building be named for Johnson, who was instrumental in the long campaign to secure the federal installation and to obtain funding for it. Nunn also said last night he felt that the designation of the Kings Bay terminal in Camden County as a Navy submarine base will have an important effect on the economy of Southeast Georgia. He said initially, plans call for Poseidon subs now in Spain to be based at Kings Bay but he predicted that later the South Georgia installation will be converted into an East Coast facility for the new Trident submarines which would entail major federal expenditures and probably a large number of jobs.
