MISS ELLEN BARBER IS LICENSED PILOT
     Miss Ellen Alberta Barber of Savannah, who several days ago was licensed as
the first woman flier in Savannah, and one of the few licensed women pilots in
Georgia, is a cousin of Mrs. R. Malcolm Russell of this city.
     Miss Barber, popularly known to her friends as "Red Wing," from a trace of
Indian blood, displayed some of the characteristic determination of the
aboriginal American in overcoming handicaps which delayed her in passing her
flying tests.
     She is employed by the Morning News, Evening Press being the secretary to
Herschel V. Jenkins, president of the newspapers. Mr. Jenkins is probably the
only president of a large publishing concern in the United States who has a
woman licensed pilot as his secretary.
     One of the few other licensed women pilots in the state is Mrs. A. V.
Baldesehwieler of Waycross.
