He was a professional square dance caller and coach and started several square dance clubs in this area. He was a charter member of the International Association of Square Dancers and a member of the Georgia and Florida square dance callers associations. A native and lifelong resident of Ware County, her served in the merchant marines during World War II and was a retired salesman with Liggett- Myers Tobacco Co. He was of Baptist faith. Survivors include his wife, Betty Ruth Colvin Barker, Waycross; Richard Eugene “Gene” Barker Jr. (wife Delilah), of Black Mountain, N.C.; two daughters, Linda B. Thomas (and husband Terriell), of Thomaston, Debbie Winder (husband Harry), of Waycross; two sisters, Eloise Barker Murray of Waycross and Elizabeth Barker Hinson of Brunswick; three brothers, Raymond Barker of Sun Valley Calif., and C. W. Barker and Carl Barker of Waycross; three grandchildren, Niki Dean, Keith Lamar Barker and Paul Winder; a great- granddaughter, Erica Dean; four sister-in-laws, Mary France Morgan, Jacquelyn Hall and Martha Sue Adams, all of Waycross, and Carol Cockrell of Gainsville, Fla.; and a brother-in-law, Roy Colvin Jr., Waycross. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 pm Sunday at Jamestown Baptist Church, Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6pm until 8pm.
