Feb. 5, 2001: Mr. Owen F. Smith, 80, (Feb. 4, 2001) Native of Pierce Co. Mr. Owen F. Smith, 80, died Sunday (Feb. 4, 2001) in the Pierce County Nursing Home following a long illness. He was a native of Pierce County but had resided in Waycross most of his life. He was preceded in death by his parents, James K. and Lydia King Smith; his grandparents, W.R. and Liza Connor Smith, Timothy Harris and Annie King; four brothers and 3 sisters. Mr. Smith was a retired farmer and carpenter. A member of the Primitive Baptist Church and served as a cook in the U.S.Army during World War II. The survivors include two sisters, Josie Henderson and Jeanette Walker both of Waycross; a brother: Lonnie A. Smith of Jacksonville, Fla.; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday (Feb. 6, 2001)in Shiloh Primitive Baptist Church. Entombment will be in Shiloh Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6 until 8 oclock. Mrs. Wanda Ruth Puckett Dudley, 52, died suddenly Friday (Feb. 2, 2001) at her residence. She was a native of Bacon County but was a lifelong resident of Ware County and was daughter of the late James E. Puckett. She was a registered nurse and a member of Grace Baptist Church. A graduate of Ware County High School and Armstrong State College. Survivors include a daughter, Kristy Dudley of Savannah; a son, Rob Dudley of Atlanta; her mother, Addie P. Puckett of Waycross; 2 brothers, Dick Puckett of Waycross, Jody Puckett of Waycross; and 1 grandson, Austin Dudley. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday (Feb. 5, 2001) in the Music Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be held in Kettle Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 7 until 9 oclock. Mrs. Ruth I. Phillips, 89, died Saturday (Feb. 3, 2001) morning in Satilla Regional Medical Center following a short illness. A native of Trail Run, Ohio and formerly of Fairmont, W. Va. but had resided in Waycross for the past year. She was married first to the late Forest F. McGirr and then to late W.J. Phillips and was daughter of the late August Byers and Hazel Teeman Byers. She was preceded in death by a sister, Blanche Athey. She was a retiree of Westinghouse Electric Corporation and a seamstress in her home for 45 years. A member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Fairmont, W. Va., sunday school teacher for 40 years, missionary society president, church board member and attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Waycross. The survivors include two daughters, Marjorie McGirr of Homesville, OH, Peggy Toth (husband Rudy) of Waycross; 1 grandson, Robert McGirr of Homesville, OH; and nieces and nephews. He was born in Woodbine, but has lived most of his life in Woodbine and Waycross. He worked as an equipment operator in the Rayonier Chip Mill. He also served in the United States Marine Corps and was a member of the Full Gospel Church of God. His parents were Rob and Gertrude Carter. He is also proceded in death by three sisters, Martha Jane, Shirley Smith, and Ida Manning. He is survived by two sons, Dennis Carter (Wife Kim) and Darrell Carter both of Waycross; one daughter, Patricia Fredricks of Pearson; one grandson, five granddaughters, one great grandson, one great granddaughter; one brother, Robert Carter of Cleveland, TX; one sister, Mary Magalean McEatchen of Woodbine, GA; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is a native of Jeannette, PA, but he is a resident of Waycross. He was a salesman for Western Auto and a member of Kettle Creek Southern Congregational Methodist Church. He was one of the founders of the Waycross Area Community Theatre. He was the past president and artistic director of the theatre for many years. He worked as a director and cast member for many productions. He was also a member of AARP. His parents were John Smith Walthour, Sr. and Ella Wertz Walthour. He is survived by his wife, Bobbie Walhour of Waycross; two sons, Johnny Walthour, III and Joey Walthour both of Waycross; two grandchildren, Taylor Walthour and Jessica Walthour; and one sister, Margaret Ghiglietti of Sarasota, FL. He was born in Headrick, OK, but has lived in Waycross most of his life. He is a retired school teacher for the Ware County School System. He also served in the United States Navy during World War II. His parents were the late William Lindsay Netherton and Ola Onieda Duke Netherton. A native of Gary, Indiana but had resided in Alaska since 1998 and had a home in Waycross. He was son of the late John W. Thurman. He was a truck driver, a 32nd degree mason and shiner in Kentucky. He loved fishing, hog hunting and motorcycle riding. My beloved husband was a true traveling man who had been there and done that said his wife. The survivors include his wife, Merita Hinnant Thurman of Waycross; a stepdaughter, Brandy N. He is survived by his wife; Iradell H. Fox of Waycross; a daughter Romana K. Lehnert of Delray, Fla; a son James C. Fox wife LeAnne of Tempe,AZ; step son Bob Ardoyno wife Johnnie of Waycross; a sister Helen Langley of Louisville,KY; eight grandchildren, four step grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, two step grandchildren, one great great grandchild. A Mass is planned for 12 noon Thursday (March 1,2001) at the St. Josephs Catholic Church. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 until 9 oclock Wednesday evening at Music Funeral Home. A scripture service will be held at 8:30. (Music Funeral Home): Mrs. Mary Ruth Floyd, 64, died Tuesday (Feb. 27, 2001) in Satilla Regional Medical Center following a long illness. A native of Brantley County and had resided in Brantley County most of her life. She was daughter of the late D.J. Hickox and Goldie Griffin Hickox. She was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. The survivors include her husband, Talmadge Floyd of Waycross; 3 sons, Tony Gerome (wife Susan) Floyd of Brunswick, Richard Earl (wife Vickie) Floyd and Samuel Eugene (wife Karen) both of Waycross; six grandchildren; two great grandchildren; two sisters, Margaret Moore of Waycross, Lucille Hughes of Hazlehurst; a brother, Lester Hickox of Waycross. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Thursday (Mar. 1, 2001)in the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Mausoleum. The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Wednesday night from 6 until 8 oclock. Mr. Gregory D. George Sr., 45 (2-27-2001) native of Waycross Thurs., March 1, 2001: Mr. James P. Johnson Sr. (2-28-2001) native of Columbia TN, lived in Waycross (Music Funeral Home): Mr. James P. Johnson, Sr. died Wednesday (Feb. 28,2001) morning at his residence after a lenghty illness. He was a native of Columbia, TN, and resided most of his adult life in Bainbridge before retiring to Waycross thirteen years ago to be near family. He was the son of the late Lex Edgar Johnson and Mary Louise Gibson Johnson. He was an U.S. Army veteran during WWII. He was a retired Job Supervisior in construction. He is survived by his Wife; Margaret Davidson Johnson of Waycross, Jimmy Johnson (wife Julia) of Waycross; a granddaughter, Maq Johnson of Waycross; grandson, Knox Johnson of Waycross; several nieces and nephews in Tennessee, Louisana and Alabama. A graveside service will be conducted 11:00 am Friday at the Kettle Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Jmmy Johnsons home Thursday evening.
