He was a native of Pierce County but had resided in Waycross most of his life. He was son of the late D. W. Courson and Eddie Hiers Courson. He was retired from CSX Railroad and after retirement he worked with Electrolux. Mr. Courson was a member and a deacon of Second Baptist Church and served in the Army during the Korean Conflict. The survivors include his wife, Bobbie Jean Taylor Courson of Waycross; a daughter, Melissa Courson Hickox (husband David) of LaGrange; two grandchildren, Brooks and Brittany Hickox; a sister, Minnie Lee Taylor of Waycross; several nieces, nephews and other relatives. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday (June 3, 2001)in the Second Baptist Church. Entombment will be in the Greenlawn Mausoleum. He was a native of Harbor, Ind. but had resided in Indiana and Florida most of his life. He was married to the late Effie Lee Sills Scott and was preceded in death by a son, Andrew William Scott, Jr. He was a retired photographer and served in the Navy during World War II. The survivors include two sons, Michale D. Scott of New York, Dennis Scott of Waycross; two grandchildren and one great granddaughter. A memorial service for Mr. Andrew William Scott, Sr. will be held Monday (June 4, 2001) at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Music Funeral Home. He was born and reared in Waycross but had been making his home for the past several years inWayne County where he was a commercial dry wall installer. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He was a retired deliveryman for Booker Oil Co. in Waycross. He was born in Florence, S.C. but resided in Waycross most of his life. His wife, Frances Thigpen Dunaway, preceded him in death. His parents were Henry Adam Dunaway and Gladys Mable Brown Dunaway. He was an alumnus of the Civilian Conservation Corps and had been employed as an auto mechanic and office manager for Waycross Auto Electric prior to his retirement. A Waycross native and the son of the former City Manager of Waycross, he was born on October 21, 1913 to Henry Morrison Pafford, Sr. and Stella Clark. He was married on October 17, 1937 to Allie Franklin Cook. They were married for 63 years until her death several months ago. He began his career by surveying roads throughout South Georgia as an engineer for the Georgia Department of Transportation. During World War II, he was engaged by the army to oversee the construction of several Army air bases in Southeast Georgia, including the air base in Waycross. After the war, Mr. Pafford entered the construction business. Among his early projects in Waycross were the construction of Memorial Stadium, the Churchwell Apartments and the Health Department on Church Street. In 1955, Mr. Pafford organized Dixie Concrete Service, Inc., a ready-mix concrete producer that operated in Waycross, Alma, Homerville and Nahunta. He soon expanded the company into the highway contracting business. He formed Rogers Bridge Co., a bridge construction firm, in the late 1950s. During the construction of interstate highway system in Georgia, this company grew to become one of the largest bridge contractors in Georgia. Early in his career, Mr. Pafford owned and operated Old South Forge, a manufacturer of cast aluminum furniture. In the 1970s, he formed Mermaid Fountain Co., which built commercial fountains, including installations in Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Through his affiliation with the Chamber of Commerce and the Development Authority of Waycross, Mr. Pafford was instrumental in bringing Scapa Dryer to Waycross and was retained as a consultant to oversee the construction of their facility. Mr. Pafford and his wife were partners in everything they did. Allie Cook Pafford was gifted in the conduct of business and was closely associated with her husband in his various construction and manufacturing companies. With a keen interest in world travel and geography, Mr. and Mrs. Pafford traveled extensively in North America, Europe, Asia, South America and Australia. They collected art objects worldwide, particularly in the Far East and Africa. Gifted with a studious and inquiring mind, Mr. Pafford had wide-ranging interest including history, science, world travel, geology, mining, and blueberry farming. In later years Mr. Pafford developed the private Pafford Lake Property outside Waycross, built a lodge that is sometimes offered to civic and church groups, and created a Scout encampment area on the lakefront. He established pine production and commercial blueberry farming on the property. Mr. Pafford served on the board of directors of SunTrust Bank of Southeast Georgia and as chairman of the advisory board of the Waycross branch of the bank. He served for many years on the board of directors of the Okefenokee Swamp Park. He was active in social and civic life in Waycross. He was a charter member of the Okefenokee Golf and Country Club and a member of the Capitol City Club. Mr. Pafford was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served on the Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees. Lastinger, 83 (6-28-2001) Pierce Co. native (Thompson Funeral Home, Lexington, SC) Mr. Walter Richart Smith, 81 (6-26-2001) Homerville native (Roundtree Funeral Home, Homerville) Mr. Wilford Eugene Edenfield, 78 (6-27-2001) Jesup native (Music Funeral Home, Waycross) Mr. Wilford Eugene Edenfield, 78, died Thursday night (June 27, 2001) at Satilla Regional Medical Center after a long illness. He is a native of Jesup, but he has lived in Pierce County for 20 years. He is a retired truck driver from D & M Trucking and Dixie Roadbuilders. He was a member of the merchant marines during World War II in Pearl Harbor. He was also affiliated with the Catholic faith. His parents were the late Clarence Edenfield and Maggie Strickland Edenfield. He is preceded in death by a son, Charles Edenfield. He is survived by his wife, Nada L. Wall Edenfield of Blackshear; four daughters, Patricia Edenfield of Augusta, Francis Glover of Greer, SC, Brenda Myers of Cossossichie, SC, and Teresa Joyce Stephens of Satsuma, FL; one son, Bruce Edenfield of Columbus; four sisters, Lucille Stolba of Deland, FL, Dean Padgett of Savannah, Christine Copeland of Hampton, and Johnnie Mae Lyons of Offerman; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and seven step-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday (July 1, 2001) at Offerman Church of God. Burial will follow in Patterson Cemetery. Saturday, June 30, 2001: Mrs. Frances Mary Ann Anderson Nettles Nizell, 82 (6-29-2001) Ware Co. native (Music Funeral Home, Waycross) Mrs Frances Mary Ann Anderson Nettles Mizell, 82, died Friday (June 29, 2001) in the Waycross Health and Rehab Center following a short illness. She was a native of Ware County and had resided most of her life in Ware County and Ematilla, Florida. She was married to the late W.J. Mizell and was daughter of the late Joe Anderson and Matilda Douglas Anderson. The survivors include two daughters, Mary Ann Wiley of Umatilla, Fla., Louise Wright of Altoona, Fla.; four sons, Early Nettles, Jr. of Waverly, Lavon Nettles of Waycross, Edmond Nettles of Blackshear, Huey Nettles of Leesburg, Fla.; a sister, Lillian Dowling of Waycross; one half-sister, Mattie Aldridge of Waycross; four half brothers, Billy Joe Anderson, Roy Anderson, Carl Anderson all of Waycross, Marvin Anderson of Atlanta; 16 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren. She was a native of Bacon County but had resided in Ware County most of her life. She was the daughter of the late John Taylor and Jean Spivey Taylor and the widow of the late Mitchell Fullard. She is survived by two daughters Hazel Combs of Millwood, Dorothy Deese of Fernandina Beach,FL., 9 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild.
